  1. Hi there. I retired from the Porsche business, but kept the 2000 996. My health is bad and I'd like to leave wife etc with fewer burdens. I brought the car back from Oklahoma ( Oklahoma Foreign - Gary & Matt ) in 2011 to Florida to complete the refurbish/rebuild. Jon and I did the typical things these cars need. The major stuff was done in Pompano Beach ( Vinnie at Gulf Performance ). New LN double row/RMS/AOS coolant tank/ MFI / coils /plugs etc. I redid the front clip so there are zero paint chips etc. ( paint was real German matching acrylic ). Car drives perfect and shows well. Previous owner spent close to 4K on professional sound system. It's still amazing today. This is a great comunity for Porsche nuts.   2. It's done all the time. There are very specific steps you'll need to take . If memory serves, you'll need to contact FL DMV and declare your intention. But you also have to apply to DOT and more important COB ( customs ). The Florida DMV website should be a good starting point. I presume you have a clean title , a current registration . I have no idea if your country of origin has exit requirements. Good luck.
  3. This is common for early 996. There are many thread devoted to this problem up here. That being said, Things wear out. I've done the left one on my 2000 C2 coupe, and recently my right window is acting up. The common issue is usually the window regulator. There a 3 micro switches I believe for each door? First try the relearning procedure on the window. It may have just forgot it's open and close parameters. If that isn't the issue, then isolate if it's acting only from the inside door handle or the outside door handle. If it fails on that, then it's likely the regulator is worn. Either way, it will require removing the door placard etc to resolve the problem. It's not an expensive repair, and offers the opportunity to replace everything related so you'll never have a future issue. Good luck.
  4. Try searching from this source www.pcarshops.com the car looks clean, and the owner has done a good portion of the things that need attention. For what its worth, shipping cars from long distances is common with Porsche. Ive done it 6 times and never had any surpirises I didn't expect. If the car checks out, I hope you plan on shipping enclosed/liftgate.

  6. For what its worth, if you plan on keeping the car , then do everything an 80K car will need. 996, like any Porsche 911 has a fairly well documented history of things that break/wear out. At 80000 miles, you are at the point where stuff happens. So,,, yes, do the IMS, do the rear seal, the AOS, bellows and ALL the coolant lines, as well as the **** coolant tank, including a new sending unit and the blue pressure cap upgarde. Do the water pump, and thermostat while you are at it. Clean out the throttle body, etc. Yes do the clutch, etc. I doubt the flywheel is out of round or damaged. Not sure if your year was a single or double. Radiators will be another area to keep an eye on. Theyre cheap in comparison to over heating an M96 block which will render you 996 into a very expensive lawn ornament. If the car trani is manual, its the perfect time to refurb it. If the car whines coming off of Hi Rev driving or you have 2nd gear pop out, or synrchros that clunk, then its time to rebuild it. I did all of this on my 00 C2 6MT coupe at 92000 and have had zero problems since. Car is now well over 100K and humming along as good as new. The peace of mind far out weighs the costs. Plus , it WILL help future valuations when you do sell out of it. Why spend $2K now , only to have to spend another $2K 6 months from now, and that much again 6 months later. Goodluck.   7. Ahsai is correct on all counts. I had a similar mystery leak more than a year ago ( MY00 996 C2 coupe 6MT ). Florida is hot and any defect on water cooling will show up especially in stop and go traffic. after any normal drive around town drive, I noticed the tell tale sign of a coolant tank leak as I had drips of coolant dropping off the left rear tail pipe. then I'd notice sometimes a small spot under right front wheel. a normal pressure test showed everything to spec. so we over pressurized to about 18ppsi and found both a flex leak in the tank neck as well as a definite Rad leak. I replaced the coolant tank including the new blue cap, sensor and hoses. and got a set of new factory Rads along with all new hoses, etc. you'll be surprised with how much road crap gets wedged in and trapped around and in between the Rads and the condensers. I was doing a major refurb and had replaced water pump, etc, so the additional fix's only made sense. good luck. you'll get it fix'd and shouldn't have anymore issues. during summer months here my dash guage wanders from splitting the 180 mark and will wander north of it depending on the ballasts/fans kicking in.

  9. www.spoilerlights.com Good place to start. You've got options to replace or upgrade to a newer look etc. I did both the 3rd light as well as the spoiler light in clear with no issues. Freshened up the look and function since they're way brighter. If you've altered the wing/motor you may need the supplied resistors, but its an easy fix. Did mine ? 2 years ago and no CEL etc. if this is what you want you also have option to upgrade license plate light to LED's etc, as well as newer style 997 rear lens. All in all, these are fun projects to do and should put a smile on your face at night . good luck

  11. hey there. Tire choice is always a challenge somewhat. As I learned over the years from my own arrogance and stupidity , its really important to realize Porsche specifies components for a reason. This being said, your choices look correct for stock 18's. What I discovered on my 2000 C2 RWD coupe was the total rolling circumference makes a difference on handling and comfort at speed. After playing around on a number of web based tire size calculators, I settled on 225 40 18 up front and 295 30 18 on rears because the difference on outside circumference was less than 1/16". I presume your rear rims are 11". but these would still fit on 10.5 rears. The other aspect not mentioned is offsets. Again, I presume your rims are stock and ET's are 50 upfront and 65 at rear. 225's upfront give you 8 inches of rubber . For aggressive driving, they are more than enough to point the car in the right direction at normal street and highway speeds. 295's give you about 11.5-12 inches of rubber at rear. They look wide, are wide and act wide. Not sure what environment you live in, but its worth looking at hardness too. Im here in Florida. Heat and rain are primary considerations. I like soft compound and am running Kumho SPT's all around. They're cheap, but well made. ( others may disagree ). The downside of any tire is wear. Im only getting about 9-10,000 miles on the rears, but I dont care. Id rather eat up tread then end up wrapped around a tree. good luck. lets us know your decision. take some pics :-)
  12. if I remember correctly last time I did this, it was far easier and better to remove bumper cover, since it gives you total access to everything up front. Easier to work on too, plus you can do maintenance on the rads and condenser, inspect them for any issues, make sure the lo tone and hi tone horns are working, etc. those hose clamps, if still factory are pressure closed, so be careful, or plan on replacing with similar spring clamps or screw type. if you're trying to keep OEM, Brian Farmer - Einmalig in Huntington Beach has pretty much all of that correct harware. its cheap and guaranteed. cant go wrong. hope this is of value.
  13. theyre a pain to do by yourself. if you can , try to start the fit in the center. those 4 screw points should hold its positions so the gaps at headlights etc are correct looking. Id then check to see if both wheel wells line up. and finally do the underneath points. hope this helps. I presume you are cleaning the radiators, etc. if you have the headlight washer, good time to check connectors and hoses. AND make sure to route the hood latch wire so that it pops out just under the right headlight unit. if you should ever need to use it, you'll appreciate this tip :-)
  14. While watching Olympics and scanning Gear&Gadgets, I stumbled on a couple of cool retro technologies that look promising for cars from 1996 to present. Fortunately for me, the previous owner spent some bucks ( $4G's) on my 996 installing JL audio amps, cross overs, alpine speakers, subs and a Kenwood 7" DVD, Sirius, XM satellite, iPod, Garmin NAV head. I always wanted to complete the trifecta and add Bluetooth, but the units are almost extinct and real pricey. A company called SUPERTOOTH has a neat little unit that clips on your visor , is self contained and pairs to iPhone and Android phones. Cost is $90.50. Since its portable, it can travel to your other car etc. Sweet. Anyone using it? ( www.supertooth.net ) The other interesting product is an OBDII scanner called AUOTMATIC. ( www.automatic.com ). For $100, you get a plug in unit that stays with the car and feeds you all kinds of real time information including monitoring for codes , CELs etc, gas use, GPS, route directions . It pairs with iPhone, Android. According to their website, Porsche 996 is compatible. Im tempted to try both, but wonder how useful the scanner really is.
  15. Rich. Moving into an unfamiliar car and especially a 996 thats over 10 years old and 5 hours away requires due diligence. There are too many facets to evaluate via emails , pictures and phone calls with the seller. I would strongly suggest sourcing a qualified Indie Porsche shop to have a thorough PPI done. www.pcarshops.com is a good starting point. Find one in relative distance to the owners location and require the car to be dropped off. Address your concerns and wants with the techs. Among the things that should be done beside bumper to bumper visual inspection and normal fluid checks, etc, etc, etc, you should also interrogate the DME even with a tip transmission. The shop will probably have durametric software at a minimum and perhaps even have PST2 and PIWIS. 996 is a complicated car with many electronics. Anything 10 years old will need attention, and parts do wear out naturally, so its a good idea to know what you're heading into right upfront. Having a thorough report also protect both you and the seller believe it or not. If you discover un disclosed issues, it gives you the ability to either negotiate or walk away without problems. The PPI may cost you $200-300, but its well worth every penny before you plunk down $20G+ and drive 5 hours. For what its worth, Ive been refurbing my MY2000 996 coupe RWD, 6MT for about 3 years now. I got the car from Matt and Gary at Oklahoma Foreign, one of the oldest PCar parts shop in the Porsche community. After an intensive discovery and settlement on a fair price, Ive spent north of $15K tearing things apart and replacing suspect items. The car now is 100%, but its been a learning experience. A fun one, but still time and costly. good luck and welcome to the family.
  16. I'm down to deciding if it makes sense to take out all the typical road rash chips on the front bumper cover and up the front hood on my 996 MY00 coupe RWD, 6 MT Blk / Blk. Previous owner had been diligent with touch up blobs, but it obviously would be esthetically better to have the front clip redone with the exact water base L741 paint. Rest of the car is perfect. Black is easier to match than light colored cars, so I'm tempted. OPINIONS PLEASE : The car is original paint. Since values of our 996 ain't going up again for sometime, does a " re- spray " hurt potential future sale: Thanks all.

If the drains are clear, and your environment/ heat unit isn't leaking up under the dash ( that should be obvious to spot on the passenger front cowl- probably a wet floor mat. ) it maybe as simple as you stated. If I leave my MY00 996 coupe under her cover up here in North Florida for more than 5 days without letting the car dry out , I'll get dampness. Its especially true during Florida rain events, which are dramatic as you know. Take the car out with top open, windows down and heat blasting at the top speed of the fan. Cycle it from defrost to mid vent and floors at max heat ( 85 degrees showing on the enviro head unit ). If you think you're leaking coolant, pop the rear hatch and see where the coolant level is on the recovery tank. At least you'll have excuses to take her out and drive the hell out of her :-)

  19. Opinions please. I found a great looking example of an 85 Targa in Gold/Burgundy, 150,000 miles . I was initially smitten as it's a color scheme that reminds me of my youth. I decided to look into it further. The dealer ( Alan Monroe- arizonamuscle) explained his terms of any discovery in a PPI and subsequent negotiations. I have never had this experience or demand. HIS TERMS ; 1) To get the car checked out at DonJackson's ( Phoneix, AZ. Great shop BTW ), I would first have to give him my credit card to which he would charge a $500 deposit. 2) He would dictate the terms/results of any discovery found in the PPI. Anything other than his list would constitute an acceptable result, immediately locking me in to a sale. My $500 deposit would NOT be returned under any circumstances. 3) He wanted to agree on a final sale price, dealer fees, etc BEFORE the car even went for a PPI. I obviously have missed something going on with pCar sales ?
  20. The rears will fit exactly like OEM. Im running 295 30/r 18 BBS with an ET63. On 11 inch wide rim. No issues. The fronts per your spec are about at turbo wide body spec. My fronts are 8 with an ET50 and there is plenty of turn radius and damper roon. Pushing the wheel further out with an ET40 plus that extra 1/2 inch may rub depending on your ride height. I certainly wouldnt try also adding the shims to this mix
  21. Sounds normal for these cars. Remember, you have a horizontal 6 cylnder car . Oil can pass between the rings on the pistons when the car is left cold for a period of time . Cold things contract including metals. A drop of oil ignited makes an amazing amount of smoke. Most of my 911's have exhibited this behavior at some point.
  22. welcome to the club. mis- fires seem to be getting common on these cars now. They're 14 years old. Yes, there are codes stored by now. If you can't get to a shop with a pst2 or a PIWIS, try and find a shop with durametric software. There are numerous threads up on this forum specifically about CEL's, codes and common ignition, coil, plug problems on 996 cars. The starting point for diagnostics usually are: coilsplugs connectors fuel trims ground straps at battery and from engine block. gremlins effecting wiring. ( yes, rodents do crawl up into our cars and chew on wires ). And, of course , this forum has some very knowledgeable folks to reach out to. ( Loren , in particular )
  23. Sorry about your C4. Presuming you have/had total coverage you may be better off taking the settlement and move forward with your next car. That the 2002 3.6 you've linked here is spotting is of concern and a PPI should highlight that problem as well as what else the car needs. RMS - main seal oil leaks are pretty common in 911's from way back. IMS should be thought of as a necessary maintenance issue. The LN bearing is preferred over OEM. 2002 is a single row bearing and you may want to keep an eye on the Porsche class action lawsuit that finally gives owners of 996 3.6 cars replacement and warranty coverage if there is an IMS failure. here's the link : http://www.imsporschesettlement.com/faqs/#qq13 AOS, water pump, coolant tank issues, coils, plugs and clutch & flywheel are the areas that usually effect 996. Being "high season" prices on 911's right now are certainly higher than they'll be in December. Of the numerous Porsches I've owned throughout the years, I've always bought off season, and factored in a realistic dollar range of costs and a time frame to replace and refurbish the cars properly. 996 is now 14 years old , and any car that old ( Porsche included ) will need work no matter what the Odometer says 996's reputation has been ruined by the WEB and the whole IMS thing. the 3.4 is a great car. Probably less than 5% of total 996 production cars were effected, meaning there are 1000's of solid cars out there. PCA.org is a great resource. That you already own a Porsche should allow you to search around the site, specifically the Chicago area club members. I'm sure you'll find reputable references for Indie shops, etc.
  24. JFP is absolutely correct. As I can attest to. I have a 2000 coupe RWD, 6MT I've been restoring. Over the last year I've have had to do numerous repairs that are common on these cars AND can be evaluated in a PPI. Coolant tank , hoses etc. AOS bellows, hoses Water pump, thermostat Oil galley housing- from jacking car up at wrong point !!!! IMS / RMS oil cooler gaskets front RADS to be safe replaced clutch to be safe You're down in Miami area. There are plenty of qualified shops that can help. Call Vinnie Colosino at Gulf Performance in Pompano Beach 954-783-7345 gulfperf@bellsouth.net His shop has PIWIS, PS2, OBDII etc.

Since you now have a Porsche you should be able to log in and decide on membership / Club options. There is a map showing all the states and chapter locations, contact info. You're down Ft Lauderdale area? There are lots of Porsche shops, fanatics running around down there.
