I just picked up my 04 C4S and have about 300 klm so far. I've been thinking about installing a PSE. Over the last year you have received many different requests on different instalations. Porsche dealer says they install PSE the way the factory sets it up. From what I have been reading the factory system closes between 30-45 klms, and then reopens, and is always one, is this so. I would like to be able at any time to open or close system when I want to, and at any speed. What is your opinon on the diffrent settings.

Well, it's mainly a matter of taste. Your taste.

For me, I left all the electronics and vacuum stuff out and run it open all the time. The factory setting is mainly for a couple of countries in Europe where they have noise laws between 30-45 klms. Installing the wiring and vacuum stuff is a big job - 8-10 hours. You have to do a lot to run a wire from the engine compartment to the front relay panel and also to the dash. Just changing the mufflers is less than 1 hour.

The switch mod described here is much better solution if you decide to add the electronics and vacuum stuff.

In the end do what you want - I don't think you will have "noise law" problems unless you drive through your neighborhood at 5000 RPM

If you need the factory install instructions let me know.

I am also thinking of getting a PSE for my MY99 C4 but still trying to get to the bottom of this whole setup.

The PSE is put into "quiet" mode at certain speeds or rpm? With the switch installed in the cab can this be overridden or is that fixed?

Is the PSE UK street legal if the switch is not installed, or will I find the car failing the yearly MOT on noise levels?

I am torn between getting the Porsche PSE full set (£2K) or half a PSE (£1100) or a third party kit (£900). At the moment I think the PSE half setup is the best.

The PSE (when hooked up) automatically triggers quiet mode based on speed. It gets the signal from the same wire that the radio uses for speed dependent volume. If the switch is installed per factory specs this will still occur but you will also have the option to go into quiet mode at other times too.

If you install the switch and the mod I mentioned in the message above you will have manual control of the quiet mode at all times (speed dependent change is disabled).

Sorry, I don't know the UK laws. Perhaps someone from the UK can answer this part.

Yes it is street legal without the switch. My dealership fitted my PSE and said that they automatically weld open all the valves and leave out the quiet switch unless the customer asks for the 2 cutouts.

The PSE noise levels comply with the Euro regulations and my dealership said that MOT would be OK. The only thing they will fail you on are litronics rigged up without the harness to control the beam directions.

:)

You said

what are these

litronics?

harness?

beam directions?

Also did you mean the dealer left it on the loud setting and still pass the MOT?

I went to my OPD today and they are going to talk to Porsche about fitting a PSE without any valve gear. Perhaps a 3rd party exhaust is calling me....

Hi Loren,

You mentioned the factory install instructions, can you mail them to me please.

I am thinking of fitting a PSE to my 2001 996 C4, I don't want the speed dependant switching, just want to be able to turn the sports exhaust off for long journeys in case the noise gets annoying.

The instructions are in the TSB section (which you as a Contributing Member have access to).

The switch is sold separately.

Thanks Loren,

I did look there, but couldn't see them. I'll look again!

Regards

Adam

Do a search for "sport exhaust" in the TSB section.
