Creaking clutch pedal

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Near the end of my drive into work this morning I found that my clutch pedal is making a creaking noise every time I press it.

The drive was through heavy traffic so the pedal got a lot of action. The noise is moderately loud and only happens when pressing the pedal (so not when I lift my foot). The action of the pedal feels exactly the same, and the car feels the same to drive.

So, I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether a creaky clutch pedal is a symptom of another problem, or if I have no reason to be concerned.

Also, I think the car is using its original clutch, after 48K miles and 7 years - might that be relevant?

it's almost definitely the booster spring, they are plagued with squeaks, you can either remove it and lubricate it yourself (easy) or just flat out remove it, most people that do this find that they like the clutch feel better without the spring

if you search in the 996 forum I think there's a guide on removal, it takes about 15 minutes and even though you're on your back with your head at the pedals it's pretty easy to do

Nah, shouldn't be an issue at all especially if you are not noticing any difference in the where the clutch engages, etc. On my '99, the pedal creaks occasionally depending on humidity - might just need a squirt of some lubricant on the spring or plunger (search the archives). 48K miles, unless you ride the clutch a lot, is nothing. There are guys w/ 160K plus on their original clutch.

I'd crawl under there using a screwdriver as a stethoscope and try and isolate where the creak is coming from when manually depressing the clutch.

Good luck!

When I took my 2003 in to ask them about the squeak that you described (@ 44k km's) I was told it was symptom of clutch wear.

Basically the release bearing would be now traveling on a previously unused portion of the transmissions input shaft, since the car was still under warrantly they said that they could replace the release bearing if it bothered me enough.

I traded the car in a few months later so I can not confirm their diagnosis.

I had the same noise forever. It sounds like from under the dashboard but it was something else. Anyway I lube everything under the dash. My mechanic did the same thing and it was still sqeaking very bad. Since my clutch started to slip, I bought clucht kit and head to my mechanic.

Yesterday, my mechanic changed clutch, plate, bearing, pilot bearing, fork and etc. He said that he cleaned all old clutch dust that build up over time.

and...

NO sqeaking. It's so quiet.

P.S. So in my case it wasn't pedal related. BTW I love my new clutch.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your advice. Weirdly, the creaking noise has disappeared (for the moment)!

If it starts happening again then I now have a good idea of where to look and how to fix it.

Thanks again!

Paul
