Intercooler hoses popped off under boost

Recommended Posts

just purchased a 2001 996 TT. Second week I had it I upgraded the ECU with REVO's 5 hour free test drive. before the ECU upgrade I was getting 0.7 BAR max, after the upgrade I got 0.9 BAR max. I was told there is something wrong I should be getting 1.1 BAR and was told to come back another day to check things out. on the way home, I accelerated under heavy boost then....heard a POP and PASM failure light, ABS failure light came on, lost power and the engine started choking. I limped home. found that under heavy boost the left intercooler hose had popped off. This suggests it may have had a leak which was preventing me from reaching the 1.1 BAR.

I know with heavy mods the hoses must be upgraded to silicone hoses, but with just an ECU upgrade the hoses should have handled the boost. Does anyone know if 2001 hoses were replaced with improved hoses with more secure connectors? Are these known to fail or leak?

Yes, there were upgraded by Porsche in TSB 2/00 2139 Power Loss and Lack of Acceleration -- dated 10-06-2000.

Loren -- Is the date of the start of the upgrade the same as the date of the TSB (10-06-00)? I have a 6/01 build MY'01 and am curious to know if I have the old or newer boost hoses. Thanks.

Edit: just looked at my passenger's side hose (US model) in the engine compartment and it has this # -- 996.110.644.73

"The new hose was introduced into production on July 24th, 2000".

As I recall there are even newer hoses than ones in that TSB (10-06-00) - at least the parts list shows newer part numbers.

Ask your dealer when you order.

Thank you Loren!

I had the same thing happen. My passenger side IC boost hose blew off and left me stranded. Right before it happened though, I was reading 1.1 bar. I just had the evoms silicon hoses installed and have noticed even more boost then before. It seems like my stock hoses were leaking somewhere. My turbo is an 03 model.
