Oil And Oil Filters

Recommended Posts

After reading Loren's excellent DIY on the oil change, I have decided to try it mysely. Can anyone tell me where I can buy Mobil 1 0W-40W synthetic and a porsche brand filter on the internet?

Thanks, Jim

I know this doesn't exactly answer your question but it is probably faster and about the same cost to just buy the oil locally (Got mine at checker for 4.50/qt) and get your filter from your local dealer (if they do not price gouge). If they do, then order it from Sunset up in Oregon (about $9.75) and the oil wrench about $15. Super easy oil change, just did my first one this past weekend.

I found the oil either at Advance Auto Parts or Autozone. I can find my way back to it, but I can't remember exactly which one of the two it was. :) It was reasonably priced.

Hope this helps.

I don't know if they have these stores in your area but, 2 national stores where I have found it are Autozone and Wal-Mart. I always look for it wherever I go and notice that it's being stocked at more and more places.

Also, you can always stop by your local Mobil gas station and see if they have it. If not, they will probably be able to order it for you. But, it will probably not be cheap.

I'd also suggest getting 1) some washers for the oil drain plug (you only need one per oil change but, you might as well stock up) and, 2) a properly sized oil filter wrench.

Some Kragens also known as Chucks and one other name also carries 0w-40. Of the 2 near my house one carries it the other does not. They put it on sale every now and then for $4/quart.

Does anyone change the oil filter inbetween oil changes to help filter out more contaminants and to prolong the oil life? Like do it at 5k, 10k, etc. intervals.

Since you are going to use synthetic, every 5 is great although you could go longer. It all depends on how hard you drive the car and if it is dusty where you live. You will eventually get an idea of what is best. I change mine about every 5k or so, which happens to be about how much I drive it every season. So just before I garage it for the winter, I change the fluids and let the car go into hibernation for the long winter. Good luck. BTW, Sunset in Oregon is great for parts. I vote for Autozone or Walmart - who ever is having a sale - stock up! I happened to get lucky at Costco one day ($2.50 per quart couple of years ago) and bought like 60 quarts. I am set for a while. :)
