help with oil leak(s)...

Like with any oil leak after it has been there a while its hard to see the point of origin.

I suggest you clean on the oil, dirt, etc. off - then take the car for a short drive stop and immediately try to locate the point of origin for the leak.

A bad RMS or IMS seal will leak from the point where the engine and transmission are joined.

After cleaning, any idea on how long to wait before a leak should be evident? If I have the car on ramps, will this affect the process?

That will depend on how bad the leak is.

Usually it will start dripping when the engine at operating temperature. Let the car sit for about 5 minutes then have a look for the source of the leak.

Ramps should be fine.

I had my LHS cambox leaking slightly and with the windage when driving the oil spread out something like yours. I removed the wheel and re-torqued the bolts (there's about 20 of them) and all is well again.

To really identify your leak, you should really chemically clean the underside of the engine with de-greaser - otherwise you are guessing.....

Purple Power (Pep Boys) is pretty good, not as caustic as "Gunk", which also works very well, especially the foamy formula.

Looking for some assistance…

I have a 2000 Boxster S six speed with 61,000 miles on the clock. I was getting ready to do the 60k service (DIY) and am discovering what appears to be an oil leak from the passenger side of the block near the rear. Also, I noticed oil residue (no drips) and grime build up around the center of the block at the back of the sump and to the rear. I can't tell if the residue to the rear is from the oil leak near the sump or if it's (dare I say) from the area of the dreaded RMS, IMS locations. Any help would be greatly appreciated identifying the sources and remediation for these leaks.

Also, I keep a piece of cardboard under the car year round and since last august, there have been approximately 7-8 drops of oil deposited on the board (indicates a very slow leak… does this make the problem any less of a problem?).

I to noticed some oil on the drivers side. Shortly there after doing an oil change at the dealer,( this pass fall) Sewickley Car Store, Pittsburgh Pa. they told me I had an oil seal around the sparkplug leaking. Having seen the leaked oil I'm going to have them replace all the seals when I do my 60k service next week.(something they recommended with my years and milage)

I couldn't tell from crawling under the car (slightly rasied with jack and jack stand) where it was coming from. But since it just started I assume they spotted the same thing I did..

Any suggestions would be appreciated for sure. In fact I thing I'll start a new link on this because I haven't seen anything on sparkplug seals.
