My 2000 c2 6 speed has a squeak on 1st gear and goes away once I put more gas into it. But sometimes I can still hear intermittent squeaking even when the gear is not engaged once the engine reaches normal operating temperature. The sound is coming from the passenger side where the A/C compressor is. The squeak is there whether the A/C is off or on. Any ideas?

Does it sound exactly like a loose fan belt? And it is more on the passenger side and towards the top of the engine? Mine started this about a week ago.

I was told is is probably the AOS going out. The AOS seal is making the noise.

I put my car on the lift and used a listening device to find noise. It seemed to be coming from an area near the oil cooler, but very difficult to locate. ( I have wondered if you were to remove the oil filler cap, would the noise would stop? - I haven't tried it or driven the car since AOS diagnosis)

I had already planned on dropping my engine and replacing many engine parts, as preventative maintenance, so the timing was perfect. (replace WP, AOS, coolant tank, plugs, plug seals, IMS bearing, VarioCam pads and chains, oil cooler seals) I'm at 101k and all these parts are still original. I figure it is best to replace the parts on my schedule, and it is much easier to replace many of them with the engine out (all at once).

I'm having a "engine pull party" on May 8th.

Belt, pulley(s), AC compressor clutch, etc. - those would be the first things I would look at.

Thanks loren:) I was waiting for your advise. A/C compressor lost all freon a couple of days ago. When a/c guy re-filled it im not sure if he also added oil. But the sound/squeak comes on only when the engine is hot or at normal operating temperature even when the a/c is off and sometimes even during idling once I have it running for a couple of hours. But the squeak at idling is intermittent. A/C works fine except for the condenser leak at the passenger side which I have temporarily patched up with steel epoxy until I get a replacement.

It is mostly at lower rpms - as I remember it gone by 2k.

When it started, I was sure it was the belt. But upon further searching, it definitely isn't. I talked to a friend that is a Porsche tech, and said AOS or loose spark plug. I went all over this engine while it was running, with my electronic listening device, and it was not the plugs or belts or AC, but was loudest under the intake manifold, in the oil cooler area. I had to be under the engine, near the transmission, to locate this.

Loren, wouldn't removing the oil cap reduce the air pressure in the crankcase and possible stop the noise, if it is the AOS seal or valve?

A loose spark plug sounds like a loud bird chirping. It would also cause a CEL.

I would still take the belt off (for a very short period of time) and run the motor to see if it goes away.

The chirping on my car only happens when I release the clutch on first gear or at low speeds and goes away once I put on more gas. Chirping sometimes happens when the engine is hot during idling ( more than 80c) but its continuous and sometimes its not there. What do you think it is loren?

I took it to my indy and left the car their for two weeks. They changed the coolant to motul inugel (we dont have the porsche recommended coolant here) and spark plugs but they couldn't find the source of the mysterious squeak. I had the underside washed also. Might have been something that got caught somewhere under car. It went away just like that. I have been using the car a couple of times and no squeak anymore came out. Prior to bringing the car to the indy for the squeak I had them check the airconditiong because there was no cold air coming out. They checked for leaks but couldn't find any until I had them pull down the bumpers to clean the rads and there we found our freon leak, at the passenger side condenser. They replaced the freon and patched up the condenser with steel epoxy until I can get a new one shipped. When I brought it back for the squeak I asked if their was a need to add oil for the compressor and they said no. I have a suspicion that the a/c compressor might be the cause of the squeak, since the sound was coming from the compressor side. I am not sure whether they added oil after I left them the car. No answers from them about the squeak and they have drained half a tank testing the car and they said the squeak didn't come out at any driving condition. Hope this helps and if you will find out anything, pls update.

Thanks a lot for the update, and congratulations you fixed it. Nice to know it was no AOS related.

As I said, my car has exactly same issue as yours; I already suspected it can be AC compressor related, since the chirping appears often when the AC is on. I'll try Loren's recommendation (trying to reproduce the problem with the belt off).

I'll keep you posted when I collect more info.

Hi folks, my boxster developed the same chirping sound a few weeks ago...I took it to a local mechanic and had them put it on a lift. we could not locate the problem, however I started shaking lines and tubes around and when I shook the AOS it made the sound change so I replaced the AOS...I was wrong the sound is still present. It sounds like a pulley or bearing going bad. I isolated the sound to right side and close to the front on top of the engine. If anyone can solve this mysterious sound I would be grateful.
