Key Won't Lock From Drivers Door

1985 911 Cab w/manual roof - no key fob - manual key only. 50% of the time you can't lock the car from the drivers side. You hear the click of open/close, but won't lock. Works from passenger side though.

Any thoughts?

You might have better luck posting in the "911, 912 (1965-1989) Series" forum.

Isn't that where this is? It looks like it to me - but maybe I'm missing something? Did I post incorectly and a Mod moved it for me?

Mikey:

When you say that it "works from passenger side...", do you mean that the driver's side door locks okay when you put the key into the passenger side door...or that the passenger side door locks when you use the key in that door?

Regards, Maurice.

Hi Maurice, thanks for the response.

I can lock both doors with the key from the passenger side. If I try it from the drivers side, I get nothing if I turn to the key to the right (to lock) but I can hear a clicking noise when I turn it to the left (to unlock), hence I can unlock the car rfom the drivers door as well (after locking it from the passenger side).

The problem lies with the micro switch in the drivers door handle. You may be able to remove the handle, disassemble it,clean &lube the tumbler&repair or replace the micro switch. Caution ! when you remove the tumbler, leave the key in the tumbler so the springs & brass keys stay in place.Easy job if you have done them before.I have repaired many, but its been a while.

Thanks Howard. I will (carefully) give it a shot. :thankyou:

  • 1 year later...

okay - so it took me a year to get to it... I took the lock mechanism apart and was able to operate the micro-switch directly out of the door lock using my finger. Push the tiny hair-like switch one way and it activates the transmission element (which moves the push rod that locks and unlocks the door) to unlock the door. Push it the other way and it makes a faint "click" sound, but does not activate the transmission element. I took apart all the connections and cleaned them - no luck. Any ideas where I go from here? It could be anything, transmission element, door locking control unit, broken wire, ???? Any ideas?
