My convertible top window came off recently. Any easy fix? Took it to an upholstery shop and they quoted me $350 to sow it back on.

Some tops on ebay go for around $500 so I am considering my options.

Any ideas?

If the upholstery shop is willing (or able) to do it without stripping the top off the frame, the price is not outrageous. They need a long-throated sewing machine to do it that way (a Juki machine) and removing and reinstalling the complete top and frame assembly is relatively easy.

If you are talking about ebay tops that are just the canvas (i.e., without the frame), you will still have to strip and re-install the top onto your frame. It's not an easy DIY, but it's doable with some good instructions available.

The shop states that they have to remove the top, then sow, and reinstall. Not sure how great of a job they'll do, which is why I'm considering getting brand new.

I am also looking at used tops from wrecked vehicles.

Ask them how they will protect your drain trays -- this is where they could mess things up and you would not know until you had problems

unless you knew where to look.

If when I pull another top -- I will try to figure out a mechanism to put a plastic insert or something in there to keep the foam drain trays from

being perforated.

Do you know where I can find a diagram of the drain tray locations? Had an immobilizer burn because of water getting under the seat and it would suck if it happened again.

The drains that are in the convertible top well are located almost directly under each V-Lever. I'll post a good pic when I'm at my other computer.

Here is that pic of the drain in the convertible top well of a 986 Boxster. This one is on the driver's (left) side. The passenger side has another one in the same location on the right.
