03-05 cayenne S vibration humming sound

Do all the cayennes sound kinda loud when driving on the highway. When i am coasting about 65 - 70 I can hear this slight humming sound and the sound changes pitch when i accelerate or decelerate, mind you this sound is very bleak. Also when I let go of the gas going 65ish the car doesnt just coast as if i were in neutral, I can feel the slight vibration in the steering wheel. I had the dealership drive it and they said its just because its an AWD with two drive shafts. Any input would be nice thanks

I've never experienced the cardan shaft bearing failure but I did experience a front diff failure. The pitch change you're describing makes me think the front diff needs a close look. This is another notch in the long list of failures for these cars.

I finally found the issue. The passenger side rear tire tread had separated from the ply so when parked, the tire seemd normal but at speed it made the noise. A dangerous situation no doubt but caught it in time. 4 new tires and a 4 wheel alignment and she runs like a dream.

How did you find out the tire was bad? I think I am having a similar problem.

I have the same sound, Cayenne S 06 Titanium, Vertex Miami told me that is the transfer wearing down because a light oil Porsche use. They repair for $ 2100 and replace with a heavier oil. I don't know if is truth or not, I don't even trust Porsche guys!!!!!

Porsche uses an ATF in the transfer case which is thin, and their are better ATF's out there than what Porsche used back then but I don't think the lubricating properties are subpar. Their have been a few transfer box failures but not too many. I think to change them all (transfer case, both Diff's, and even tranny fluid) is good preventitive Mx if you plan on keeping it a long time. I changed everything on my '06 CTTS between 55~58K. If I still have it I'll do it again sometime after 100K.
