Transmission replacement

I have a 1999 996 C2 6 speed with LSD and 74,000 miles. The car is near perfect and has had no problems until it began to jump out of 2nd gear when cold. This has gotten worse in the last few months and I think it is time to replace the transmission. So, where do I get a replacement? What other things should be done to the car while the transmission is out? What shop in the Atlanta area is qualified to do this work?

Shops that repair these gearboxes are specialty shops; there are only a few of them around. I know of none in the Atlanta area. The two shops that I know of that have done excellent repairs/overhauls in the past are GBox out of Boulder, CO; and Lufteknic out of Richmond, VA. We have used GBox on a couple of occasions and they have been fine. Both have websites.

You would pull the gear box out and either ship it to them for repair, or they also have an exchange program where you buy one already done and ship yours back as a core. GBox typically turns the trans around in a couple of days.

While your gearbox is out, it would be an excellent time to do your IMS/RMS updates, new clutch if necessary, and the AoS as it is out in the open with the gearbox out.

Though I live in Dubai, I had some questions regarding my 6-speed transmission, and exchanged e-mails with Erik at GBox. He was happy to answer questions, and did so quickly, knowing full well that I wasn't going to be a customer while living on the other side of the world. I was impressed with his knowledge, courtesy, advice, and professionalism. If you end up going with them, drop my name, and please update us on how it went...

I was going to suggest the same thing. I had a problem where the transmission would jump out of 2nd gear. It only happened when cold and it only usually happened immediately after putting it in gear. After a while I could tell when it was going to happen because the shift into 2nd gear wasn't quite as deep as normal.

I had my local indy replace the 2nd gear detent with the one from GBox when they had the transmission out of the car for an IMS upgrade. The part is just a small steel cylinder and is relatively inexpensive. Apparently it is possible to DIY with the transmission in the car. You should be able to find many discussions on the subject by searching here or on google.

I have yet to test out the fix with sub-zero celcius weather, but otherwise I haven't had any problem since.
