Pre-emptive Transmission Change / Fluid Changes

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

My 05 S car is now at 100K Miles. I am thinking about changing the transmission in another 20K or so miles as pre-emptive change. I already bought the fluid (Toyota Type IV ATF). So I have a few questions:

1. My dealer hasn't sold a transmission filter for nearly 4 years. It's just a metal piece. Does it really need changing?

2. My dealer also hasn't sold many of the the gaskets (Pan, Drain, Fill) either. Do those need changing?

3. Can anyone recommend a brake fluid for the O5S?

4. On the transfer case fluid change, does the car need to be level? Is it OK to just ramp up the front? (Do not have Air Suspension)

Thanks!

Preemptive change?  By that mileage you should be at the end your second service already.  We never let them go beyond 40-50K.

That said, the reason your dealer does not sell very many filters or pan gaskets is the price they are charging for them.  You can do much better in the after market or online.  We like to pull the pan to see what residue or debris has collected.

We stay with "super DOT 4" brake fluids and use ATE as our standard fill.

Yes, you need to get the vehicle as level as possible to correctly fill the transfer case.  Doesn't have to be perfect, but it needs to be at least close to level.

Thanks JFP!

One more question;

Does anyone have the part numbers for the fill and drain gaskets? I'm unable to find those two anywhere on EBay :(

Thanks!

OK:

Pan gasket: 955 397 016 00

Filter: 955 307 403 00

Filter Gasket: 955 325 443 00

Drain and fill plug gaskets: 955 321 181 01 & 955 321 379 00

  • 2 weeks later...

I used 75w90 LS mobile 1 for the front and rear diffs. The front takes .75qt, and the rear takes about 1.25 quarts.

I used Redline D4 ATF for the transfer case and the Transmission. Using the D4 ATF in the transmission really helps to reduce gear noise, and (imo)improves shifting alot. I know the Toyota fluid is supposed to be the same as the oem porsche fluid, but I still feel like the Red line product is superior.

so i'm a type iv guy.....but that being said redline is a synthetic....type iv is not a true synthetic.....i start to wonder about compatibility with bushing/bearing/seals.

that being said, i know plenty of people running D4 without any reported issues.

Personally type 4 is so cheap, you can change it whenever you want to with little impact cost wise.

I'll post up the UOAs when i get a chance.....some interesting things i found with the OEM fluid, which might point to why we have valve body issues.....stay tuned.
