Cardan shaft question

I replaced my cardan shaft few years ago.

Driving to work the other day, bang bang bang. Hear the all too familiar banging noise.

Barely got home that evening. Took some pics.
Has anyone had their flex disc torn? I have never heard of it. It was OEM (at least was claimed to be).

Questions:

1. With the flex disc gone, does this mean the shaft is in need of replacement too? I was hearing that banging sound from under my car seat area when driving (even slow speed, when accelerating).

2. What other hardware do I need (aside of drive shaft and flex disc) when doing the replacement? Do not recall anymore.


Thanks. Here are the damage pics of the flex disc, and the shape of the support bearing.

The shaft is moving up/down inside the bearing about a couple inches when I press hard with hand, but that's likely due to the bearing having rubber bushing.

If the centre bearing is ok then you could just buy this eps retrofit mount which means the whole cardan shaft doesn't have to be removed.

shafts gotta go out anyway to replace.  Ordered the flexdisc and inspected the bushing.  Looks on way out too.  Looks like i will replace the disc, bushing and shaft.  

Should arrive Mon/Tue.

You got some hair sticking out there too my friend.  I would check for cracks on that flexdisc.   Maybe time to get yours replaced before it affects the shaft.

I just hate replacing a flawed design with another flawed design, when you can improve it for less $$$.

Yes this is the eps kit mentioned above, just note this kit only replaces the mount it does not replace the bearing itself! If the bearing is worn or noisy this is not the total solution.  

Eps have provided a tube of grease to repack the bearing which is prudent and in most cases this will work for many for years.

The sad point in this story: the driveshaft and flex disc was replaced by my indy last year.

Is it under warranty then? All oem parts have 1 yr warranty.

Have to find the bill. As lucky as i am i wouldnt  be surprised if will be 14 month ago.

Oops, sorry lewis.....your original reply was dwarfed by those pics right above it and I missed it.  However, the EPS one you posted looks like it's about 40% more $$$ than the one I posted (and installed on my car)?  What's the difference?

No difference apart from you found a better price I think.

what a person can do wrong during changing a drive shaft if it was not a material failure?

Alignment of the shaft is critical.

There is a specific alignment tool that is used to install the bearing carrier assembly.

Its a porsche service. But i would not be surprised they just hammered it in.

parts, parts, parts, and many things not done in the right way. 

This cardan shaft was just changed in case of. Thats now the result. You think you have a new part and drive save. Opposite happens.

Inspected the drive shaft and its bearing today. Visually i cant find anything wrong. But when i wiggle the shaft it sounds not good

Shop called me today. Only the flex disc is gone. Rest is good. Service guy told me he changed and testdrive feels very good

Good news the cardan shaft is OK then. 

 

Did the shop look into your other engine codes when it was there?

I got my car back. I was told by my shop the cardsn shaft is ok, the flex disc was destroyed.

yes ! The shaft and the disc was replaced last year
