2005 Cayenne Handbrake/parking brake issue

Hi all, Ive got a fault with the electric parking brake on my 2005 cayenne s 3.2 automatic.

The pull switch for the parking brake appears to do nothing, Ive had the problem a while,  so have avoided using it.

The mot is due in may and so i have found sometime to sort it out, along with a few other issues ive sorted already.

A few days ago i went to fuel the beast up and pulled the brake switch, sods law - activated to engage. however there was little to no reistance when i drove off with it still on,  it wouldnt deactivate off the switch. After a few miles however, it did release and the dash warning went out (along with the constant audiable noise) and has not come on again since. ive not pulled the switch again for fear of it engaging but not releasing again.

has any one had similar problems?

Is it likely its just the switch or is it something in the calipers like a solinoid fault or whatever they call them these days?

Take off the rear wheels and remove the calipers and discs. You will possibly find the hand brake shoes and disc drums are needing to be replaced.

 

My brake shoes were badly scored and the dics were very badly corroded, that's why I had to replaced the discs.

I don't think they are electric handbrake. It's a cable on my 2006 TTC

angusc is correct - your car should have mechanical brake shoes inside the rear discs. These brake shoes have mechanical adjusters and may need adjustment (assuming your cable is not broken.)

Loren, are the brake shoe return springs replaceable? I think one side of mine broke, as I heard a POP when depressing the parking brake pedal once. Now, the left rear wheel makes a spinning noise from 20-45mph. It sounds like a out-of-balance tire, but the tires has been changed 3 times already....

Yes, they are replaceable. 

Not that big of a job - but you might want to do both sides. Then re-adjust the parking brake tension.

If the return spring broke(near caliper side) will the shoes slightly grind-up against the inner rotor? I have been trying to diagnose this annoying "whump-whump" sound for 3 weeks now!
