Air Conditioning went out Boxster 2000

:(

Yesterday it worked OK, but today, only hot air comming out. I noticed that event though it is not cold, the engine still seems to work harder when I turned on the ac.

Does this mean that it needs to be recharged? I've been using the ac in the car everyday to do round trips to work (about 45 mins one way) and could that deplete the freon?

Please give me some advises. Should I go and have some shop to recharge the freon or just bring it to the dealer ($$$$).

Thanks,

It sounds like you have a freon leak in you system. You should take it to an A/C shop or dealer and have them do a leak down test. If you have a leak you'll obviously have to fix that before you can refill the system. Good luck!

I did take it to an AC shop, they did a test and found that there was a leak, but did not want to fix it. So I need to take it to the dealer on Monday. Thanks for the advise. I should have waited until Monday and saved some money.

I found out from a local Porsche repair shop that there is a leak in the air copmressor. To replace it using a refurbished one would cost 995+tax. For the new one, they will charge me around $2k.

Then I called the dealer, the dealer said that if the core is still useable then it is $995 parts+675 labor, if the core is not good, then $165 extra. I will take the car to the dealer for this problem then since it does not cost more than the local repair shop. Thanks,

MSRP on the exchange compressor unit (996 126 011 BX) is $925.72 -- perhaps a little gouging there.

I'm having the same problem on my '97 boxster that I recently purchased. When I turn on the AC the RPMs change but cold air doesn't come out. Is there anything that I can check myself before taking it to a shop (relay, switch)?

Thanks,

Tim

What ever you do , don't take it to Rusnak, they tried to rip me off. They qouted me $2500. I refused to do it then they said they charge me $200 for checking it out. I paid $200.

Sorry, do not know anyone in Pasadena to fix Porsche. Just shop around and check on prices.
