weird sounds with air conditioning on

Recommended Posts

I just got the car in the winter and have begun using the air conditioning recently. I've noticed with the a/c on, there is a kind of whiney sound that comes from the rear of the car, engine area, when the car is slowed to an idle. When you have the a/c on at a stand still and give the car a little gas, the whiney sound starts as the RPMs rise. When you let off the gas, the sound continues for about 10 seconds and then quiets down. When you hit the A/C button off ( fan still running) the sound stops completely.

Is this normal?

Thanks,

I had the same on my 01 C4. Just had a guy round to service the aircon. He found that there was ~1600g of gas in the sysytem - should be about 200-800g. He drained the old gas out and regassed it - seems to work ok now.

He told me that often this problem occurs when main dealers service the aircon as they don't always take as much care.

Cost me £82. Hopefully worth it.

Thanks,

could be as simple as a belt... when the ac compressor engages it torques the drive belt a little and it just slips... when you give it gas the characteristics of the belt change... Does it should like a belt noise, or something slipping?

Skipp,

Easiest thing to do is go down to Hendricks and ask one of the sales folks to see one of the used ones they have on the lot. That is what I did a while ago, some AC sound is normal. Hard to describe with words, but when you hear it in other 996s, you can tell if yours is loud or just the sound of AC going on.
