  1. I'll stick with my spin-on filter and short oil change intervals. Maybe Porsche engine quality will improve under VW?
  2. i'm still trying to figure the benefits of this upgrade. The benefit is a far superior filter to the OEM paper job. The filter recommendations given by Charles from LN, filter far more finer particulate than the factory filter. This, coupled with with magnetic drain plug, captures material that otherwise gets recycled throughout your engine between each oil change. Even if you do not wish to switch to the LN adapter, do your engine a favor and change the oil frequently (5 to 6k miles).
  3. Looks like your windshield guys just cut the wires. Isn't the other end of the connector still in the female housing?
  4. Very strange the leak would stop with ***** thin Mobil 1 0W40...if it reappears, I'd go with 10W40 or 15W50, depending upon your climate.
  5. There are many other tires out there that will work on your Boxster...I, for one, do not have a hang-up on the Porsche approved rating. Doesn't mean the other tires aren't acceptable, they just didn't pay the juice to have the the tires tested and put on the list. Just don't buy some cheap unknown brand; if you stick with a quality manufacturer, you will not have an issue.
  6. Very sound advice from Mr. Raby. I would consider yourself lucky that the problem was found before a catastrophic failure. The IMS bearing upgrade is cheap insurance to keep your engine from imploding. Read about it here: http://www.flat6innovations.com/saving-an-...ne-ims-retrofit
  7. I've not heard of puttting vasoline on a painted/clearcoated wheel. You'd be far better off removing the wheels, cleaning them thoroughly and waxing them with a poylmer like RejeX. I have Fuchs wheels on my 911 that are clear anodized...they benefit from vasoline because it permeates the soft surface.
  8. I think you're pushing the limits at 20 psi... But I agree, your bleeder valve (or port) is clogged somehow.
  9. Geez, and I thought I'd had a couple bad days. At least all ended up with was a headache from work.
  10. This, a quote from Jake Raby, from another thread: "When I hear any complaint of a rattle in the engine I immediately recommend having the IMS bearing checked for issues.. Thats because if caught early enough it can be repaired... Sometimes 1 mile of driving can make the difference in salvaging the engine or not. Lots of things can rattle including water pumps, pressure plates, A/C compressors and the list goes on.. None of those rattles are more critical than that of the IMS bearing. Thats why ANY rattle should be taken seriously and looked at immediately!" Looks like you truly did luck out on this one!
  11. Why would you purchase another Porsche engine filled with design flaws that may only grenade again? My money would be on Jake Raby... http://www.flat6innovations.com/
  12. My feeling is don't be afraid to work on the car yourself...worst that happens is you screw it up and then take it to someone for repair. Better yet, ask around and see if there is someone near by that can lend you a hand...lots of folks enjoy wrenching cars on an afternoon. My friend has two lifts and has shown me how to do projects I never would have tackled on my own (pulling the 911 engine, swapping trannys and installing coilovers, just to name a few projects).
  13. I would assume a '97 is the same as later models, but to activate the foglights, you pull the light switch out to "click". Do you have an owner's manual?
  14. I've never seen any in all my perusing of the various p-car parts listings, so I doubt they exist. I think it would be fairly simple to fabricate blanks on your own, if you have any reasonable abilities.
  15. Music to my ears...everyone that hears/rides in my car wants to know my setup. I took it out this past weekend to Road America for a few tune up laps before driving my track 911. The sounds were awesome...
  16. MY '02...mine looks like the early type, as well (no black lettering).
  17. I'm in the northern Chicago suburbs (Route 22 and 94). I'm heading up to Road America early tomorrow for the spring vintage festival, but will return Sunday night, if that helps. Shoot me a PM and I'll see if I can help you out...if it's a local dealer, I may even know them. J Matta
  18. Depending upon your tire brand, you will see small arrows on the side of the treadwall. If you are not rolling over to the arrows, you are overinflated. Conversely, if you are rubbing them off, add a little more air. Track days are a blast; concentrate on smoothness and don't worry about how quick you are...it comes with seat time.
  19. I think that's the consensus...these aren't drag cars.
  20. Jake, I read your write up with great interest, but do have a question. I thought I'd read in prior comments that the dual row bearing was actully larger than the outer diameter opening in the case? After looking at your photos, this is obviously not true. It appears the difference is the retaining clip that collapses when you pull the bearing with the special tool Charles devised. That sucker must be pressed in really tight from your comments about forces and possible case breakage. Thanks for the great write up!
  21. Same thing happened on my friend's '02 S. Took a little over a week of different driving patterns and time to get the system up to "ready". Keep in mind, every time you disconnect the battery for a length of time, you clear all those codes and need to start the process over.
  22. Though I'm no expert, I had a similar problem with one of my 911s...swapped fuel pumps with a spare my friend had and problem solved. Seems they run for a while, then die, but will run again when cooled slightly.
  23. These are 996 headlights which I deambered. Much less expensive than Litronics and I really don't drive the car that often at night to justify the expense.
  24. cant see the allure of hearing the induction What!!!? How can you not be taken by the sound of the air rushing into your engine? The deep howl? My 911 runs 40 IDA triple throat Webers and I absolutely love the sound when the butterflys open. My Box S was so quiet, I've had to do mods to make it sound like a sports car. bmohr, did you install an EVO and were still disappointed, or a copy?
