  3. Absolutely! I trade out those ridiculous Torx screws every chance I get. Phillips or hex head, whichever is easiest to use and the right tool is always in the front of my tool kit. No more searching around for that "special" bit.
  4. Yes I did quite a bit of racing in my youth...when I thought I was invincible. The rollover was in my truck on the way to work. A woman on her cel phone totally blew a red light and T-boned me at the drivers side rear wheel and over I went. Just a few scratches and bruises. No serious injuries to either driver. We were very blessed. It was a pretty wild ride though and it could happen to anyone.
  5. Actually you can probably find a nice pair of matching Recaro sport seats for about $1600 US. They won't be the 5 point racing versions but they will fit you like a glove and look like a million $$. At 5'10 I fit perfectly in the stock seat. Not a lot of wiggle room as it should be in a performance sports car. I do try to limit trips to 2hrs. If I want big, soft, wide, cushy seats for a long trip I drive the Lexus instead and then suffer the complete absence of road feel and driver involvment. It's all a tradeoff. For me the question is simple...If I really didn't fit in the car it's time for new seats or a new car. I have been in a few spectacular crashes in my day including a triple rollover. I don't want my head banging around on the roll bar.

  7. Insite has this same setup on his car and it sounds like he has been testing it and really dialing in susp/align for best performance. You might search his M030 post for ideas and save a few steps along the way to your own ideal setup.
  8. CJ, I read on this site a while ago that simply running your car on empty can goof up your ECU programming and cause the symptoms you describe. In an earlier case the cure was to simply disconnect the battery long enough to wipe out the memory on the ECU and drive the car to "re-calibrate" it. Has this been done already?? You will need your radio security codes to reset your radio but this costs nothing and you can do it yourself. If this has already been done it sounds like time for a skilled tech to do a diagnosis. I have a local guy near me in SOCAL. He has lots of experience but his diagnostic skills on newer cars are only fair and he is not cheap.
  9. I am currently running the older Eagle HP's. Very satisfied so far. Probably not quite as sticky as the GSD3, better treadwear, quiet and good dry and wet performance. I will probably try the GSD3 next time around.
  10. Absolutely! A very simple maintenance to keep your car running well. The MAF sensor is my first stop after a check engine light if it looks fuel mixture related.
  11. Sports cars are kinda like fighter aircraft. To be sucessful you gotta know your strengths, know your opponent, and fight your fight. Boxters are all about cornering, handling, braking. They are not about straight line street racing. If drag racing really floats your boat that's cool... just take it to the track. You might want to trade your P-car for a Viper or Saleen Mustang though. They are all about straight line performance. Unless you have enough $$ for an Enzo, no car really does everything well. For minor engine mods edevlins approach makes the most sense to me. Get the car to breath better and remap the ECU to take advantage of better airflow. This should improve performance and preserve reliability. $4000 is a lot of beer money though. Want big HP gains?? Drop in a 996 3.4L to the tune of about $15k. If you go out street racing you are still going to get beat up by those hot rodded rice burners. Is it really worth the money?? Not to me.
  12. Your Box S is already a lot of car with enough HP to get most drivers in trouble. It is no dragster but it's got a very good power/weight ratio and few cars at any price can match it's precise cornering, handling and braking. I was at a DE last weekend and watched as skilled drivers in Boxters, 914's, Miata's and Honda S2000's were routinely running down cars with twice the HP and cost twice as much. One guy was bragging beforehand that he has added over $20k in performance mods to his WRX and produced over 500HP. He was getting passed all day. How sad. If your question really is: How can I get the best performance from my Boxter? Leave the motor alone. Fix the nut behind the wheel first... really learn how to drive your car. There is a lot to learn. Once you start running down everyone in your class, focus on tires/alignment/suspension tuning. Now you are running down Vette's and Vipers and things are starting to get fun. Enjoy! :thumbup:
  13. I see now. Didn't get a good look at your runners from the previous pic. I knew it was a custom sheet metal intake box and figured reverse cowl induction. I still don't like the flat surfaces at the bottom. Possible standing waves in the box. You are creating a ventouri effect now which is pretty good. As you already know, a little intake turbulence is good because it improves air/fuel mixture. Standing waves off the bottom of the box work against you.
  14. Jim, Manifold your intake. See I knew you would laugh. Maybe I am missing something from your pictures but it looks like your current intake has tons of air volume but there are also some flat sections at 90 degrees to the direction of airflow. These can cause air to stack up and at high velocity cause standing waves which interfere with cyl. intake velocity. Manifold your intake with all curved surfaces and individual runners for each cyl. Tune runner length and diameter to match your desired intake air pulse rpm. This should give you great top end performance and improved low end torque as well. These changes may be tough to measure on the dyno because you are standing still... At 100mph you will notice. This is what the fastest cars in the world are doing. Maybe a good winter project. :)

  17. Certainly looks like a design change...fittings on the top and easier to get to :D . It is still molded plastic so it's gonna crack someday :( .
  18. Your symptoms still sound exactly like bad motor mounts. Many 986's have reported the same problem and it was motor mounts that were worn out or slipping side to side during turns causing vibration against the frame. Are you sure??
  19. Jim, Well I guess we have pretty much beat this horse to death haven't we? Nice pictures by the way. You sound like a bright guy with a passion for cars. I hear what you are saying... I just don't agree and that is ok. Spirited debates are part of what this forum is all about. I am no exhaust system expert, but I have been around the block and built an engine or two. Maybe someone who is smarter than both of us will come along and tie this whole thing together and we will both learn something. Until then I will stand by my principles if you will stand by yours.   20. 986jim, I guess you and I are just going to have to agree to disagree on this issue. Take your race car: You decide to enter it in three different classes this year. The first class is an intake restricted class choked down to a 2" diameter; the next class is a N/A unrestricted class; the third class is unlimited ( supercharged 30lb boost) class. Same basic engine, same displacement, very different intake air mass and very different exhaust gas volume. Would your exhaust system experts recommend the same exact set of pipes on all three setups or would they "tune" the exahust to match each different setup to maximize your performance in each class?? Ask em.
