  1. sounds like the guts of a cat tumbling around, but hard to tell. whatever it is, my friend, it doesnt sound good. dont risk it. get thyself to the garage. ps: still love that Orient Red car of yours. hope this is not really serious. interested to know what this turns out to be. jl
  2. It's a good look, yes, but you dont need to do this. reminds me of all the conversions to make 911's look like SC's, and to make SC's look like 993's. I was never a great fan of the fried-eggs on the 996, but you know it is a unique look for a P-car and I think most folks on the 996 forum are probably into it. If not, why do so many people still own them and obsess over them. personally, I got over any angst I had re the headlights due to the backside of the C4S. I looked at changing out the front, but just haven't needed to go there. I suppose I feel a bit the same way about putting a whale tail on a non-turbo older 911. the 996 is what it is. I remember a comment Ben C. made a few years ago about just enjoying the special look of the 996. all that being said, the front end mod you noted does look pretty good. but for me, it looks too much like a 997. I'd put the dollars into a twin-turbo conversion like Birk's if I could somehow figure out how to not have my wife find out about it. I never thought I'd get in to having a 996, but after a few years it's still a blast, fried-eggs and all. good luck with whatever you decide to do. enjoy.
  3. as I understand it, the horn will beep only if an alarmed item is not closed, like the glovebox, or the center console. check all connections to be sure they are closed completely then try the alarm again. the horn should sound only as a warning of an open connection. if the alarm is properly set there should be no beep from the horn. good luck...
  4. check out the "official 996 C4S" thread at 6speed, if you haven't already done so. great pics and C4S posts...
  5. I'd guess fuel pump and/or fuel pump relay. try swapping the relay for another.... then check whether the pump is getting juice and working... good luck
  6. clean or replace maf? replace battery/check voltage and possibly replace alternator. how long had the car been sitting before this happened? possibly all battery related issues... good luck
  7. 1. check the air box... just to be sure it has an escape valve installed. if not, its probably a cracked box... 2. replace the fuel pump relay.... and/or replace the fuel pump 3. replace the cis unit.... this probably is too basic to help, but I replaced several fuel pumps in my '79 over the years and is all I can think of at the moment. good luck...
  8. I put a Pioneer unit in the dash of my 79 with a 6cd remote changer in the front. the head unit had a cassette player, I'm not sure anyone would want one these days, but did not have a single cd player. I've had some "mysterious Porsche issues" with the CDR23 in my 03, but nothing really serious. I find the single cd more useful on a daily basis than a changer, but a changer is good for books on a long trip. Bottom line, forget the CDR, you could not use fiber optics in your '77 anyway, and get a good traditional older style after market unit like Pioneer or Alpine. Check the Crutchfield catalog. I think your stock unit would have been a Blauplunkt model. best.....
  9. One of my pics is in front of a "monument to flight". The aircraft represented are YF-23's, which lost in a head to head competition with the F-22 to take over for F-15's. Don't even know if there are any flying versions around anymore. Definitely correct on the side markers, have them on order. What type of bulb did you use - amber of clear, LED's? The headlight question had to do with alignment and the stagger affect of aiming the beams for Bii-Xenon's. My other cars go through a process of self leveling when the lights come on and appear to be balanced. On my P-car, I was told that the self leveling affect takes place when you turn on the ignition and that the driver's side light should be "slightly" lower than the passenger headlight due to oncoming traffic. thanks for solving the mystery. there's an F15 similarly mounted at the air/space museum in McMinnville, OR. the bulb for the clear side marker is clear as well. best....
  10. great looking car... I enjoy mine as well. I'm stumped on the YF-23, and dont mind asking what you mean. also, consider going to the clear side markers instead of the amber, several good threads on changing over.... and what happened to the headlight question??
  11. I had this problem on an older 911, and replaced the washer pump several times over the years. could be the problem. another issue is the clogging of the nozzles. clean them with a pin, or thin copper wire, and see what happens. and.... to avoid flooding either the front of your older car, or the area wherever the pump is located in your 996, if you do replace the pump remember that druck means pressure, and behagen means tank.
  12. Pirelli PZero Rosso Assym's were great, but I switched over to Bridgestone Potenza 050 pole positions. very good traction in the wet climate where I live. no snow, but lots of rain. there are many, many posts and threads on tires... and compare brands, specs, and prices at TireRack.
  13. why would you want to again? Imho it can be done, but the wear on the clutch isnt worth it.
  14. interesting question. hope someone has an answer. file under "mysterious Porsche issues." and...that looks like some fine car you have out there...
  15. I enjoy my C4S everyday. Some folks refer to them as the C$S. All of the points you mention are covered and discussed many times over on this forum. The search engine is your friend. Welcome....enjoy....
  16. I've enjoyed my 2003 C4S every day I've had it. (Except when the alternator went out and had to be replaced along with a new battery after the car sat for a few weeks without a trickle charger on the battery.) (and every now and then the radio electronics lock-up, but that goes away with either a restart or cycling a cd into the head unit.) (there are some "mysterious Porsche issues" out there, but all are pretty much discussed somewhere in this great forum.) I couldn't pass up the 6speed when I got my car, and I think this forum notes more repair issues with the tiptronic than the manual trans. I was actually looking for a tip, but realized I had another stick left in me. If I lived in the City, or had a heavy b2b commute everyday, I probably have gone for the tiptronic. but for mountain road driving where I live the stick is great fun. cant go wrong with the C4S either way, imho. good luck.
  17. hey pal, nice seeing that very good looking Orient Red c4s out and about. I remember lots of good pics at 6speed. I was going to suggest cleaning the maf, but as noted in an earlier post it seems that sometimes a cel problem can clear itself. I clean the maf at every oil change with maf cleaner from a spray can. Isn't it funny how often problems are noted here after a day at the track. Well, maybe that's not too funny actually. You might think about getting a Durametric kit for checking the fault codes. A Durametric is a good investment to consider. good luck with this issue. Hopefully a non-issue.
  18. Loren has commented on this issue in the past. I think it should be classified as a pinned topic, under "mysterious Porsche issues." This happens occsionally to me. It's solved by either putting in cd, then removing the cd once it begins to play, (this works if your driving along), or stopping the engine, removing the key, and starting up all over again. I'm not sure there is any real answer, and I'd wonder if you really need to replace the head unit. good luck
  19. advertise nationally here, and on 6speed, and for sure you're a member of the PCA so advertise there as well. then, by serendipity, you will meet a good person in your local drugstore and end up selling your car to someone you know, who has had Porsches before, who always liked your car, and who asks you, out of the blue sky, "hi, Jon, when will you ever sell me your car?" I kid you not. good luck....
  20. I drove my 911sc every day for about 326k miles. I've been driving my c4s every day since about March, 2008, and enjoy it every day. The only problem I've had was after the car sat for a few weeks without being driven. the c4s combination of looks, comfort, driveability, power, and handling makes it a great daily driver. Mods available ad infinitum. for a thrill check out the twin turbo mod being done by Boochook, check that out on 6speed. I'm starting to appreciate the headlights. The rear end is the best of all the 996's by acclamation. good luck...
  21. my spouse rides with me on a road trip about once a year. that's plenty for her and for me too..... but once a year is more often than she rode in my 911SC, and that's because now my C4S has cupholders and airbags. I don't use the cupholders, and hope like hell to never use the airbags either. BUT, imho, I'd drop the line "daft mrs.," and just focus on enjoying the car. worked for me... good luck.
  22. how about a picture of the head unit installed....
