  1. What's tire pressure? I've heard 44 psi tends to wear out center fast and 40 psi is a good setting.
  2. I use car ramp, safe and easy compared to jackstands. They are $25 at Pep Boys/Kragen. Not sure if you get enough lift for a mid engine boxter though For tools, it depends on cost and your expected usage. Cheap tools from autoparts stores may last 4-5 yrs for occasional wkend usage. Kraftsman will last 10+ yrs and cost you 3-4x. I'd start with some cheap tools first from Costco and upgrade later after you know which tools you need more often. Always choose metric tools too, not standard tools.
  3. Coolant is supposed to be lifetime for 996, same w PS fluids. At 23k, your tranny oil should be fine. Check the service / mantenance section of the forum. I think spark plugs are due at 30K mi and brake fluid every 2 yrs are the only things outside of 15/30k service intervals.
  4. how often do you put the roof down? btw, you'll need the extra oomph when the top is down to hear the music. the bose is one of the nicest stock stereo i have heard, it is a surprisingly good the more you listen to it.
  5. I'd recommend you get the Bose. It'll be cost prohibitive to go aftermarket upgrade w MOST wiring if you determine you'll want something better than your HIFI system.
  6. PCM 1 needs 7 CD for maps. It's no longer updated by Navtech so your stuck with the map you got.
  7. That's what the sticker says. However, given that most tire wear is in center rather than on edges, would it make sense to lower it to promote more even tire wear?
  8. Why don't you trade it in? This way, the dealer will fix it right and it'll cost them less money to do so then you. I'd get a quote from dealer for trade in to see if it makes sense to fix or not. I'd venture your fix is $1-2K. Dealers usually milk you for $3-4k.
  9. 3M is more rigid which makes it harder to install. Yellowing is from earlier product, which used to have bad ahesive. I have Venture and it's said to be really good. I have no issues with it so far and it's the only film with lifetime warranty!
  10. Try trickle charging it. If it's not doable, replace it. Remember to use a batt maint next time
  11. Since P antifreeze is supposed to last a lifetime, I wouldn't change it if you want to save money. If you do change it, $50 of antifreeze isn't gonna hurt anyone's wallet here.
  12. Max performance tires wear about around 10k. If you drive aggressively, 8600 is expected. Do you check tire pressure monthly? Are wears even? Check tirerack for ratings. Michellin Pilot Sport and Pirelli Zero are amongst favorites. If tire wear is hurting your budget, get some less agressive tires that normally are put on sports sedans like Bridgestone 750.
  13. What's your reason for not parking in a garage? I park in spaces that do not have another space on the right side to minimize ding. Parking structure often have pillars which create wide space between cars. I also check for overhead leaky pipes in garages. No parking on steep ramps in structure as doors can fly open.
  14. 1. Any engine error code? 2. Possible vac leak somewhere bc you are stalling and idle is irratic. Spray carb cleaner generously around possible areas. If idle surges when you spray, that's where the leak is. 3. Possible transmission synchro/computer issue. Unlikely since your idle is also irratic. #2 will be hard to diagnose. I'd suggest you have a Porsche dealer or specialist find the leak bc they'll know where to look. You can look at vac hoses for leakage and possible manifold/pipe gasket leak.
  15. You can use the CDC input if you want direct connection from XM unit to head unit instead of FM modulation. You'll get better sound but FM modulation isn't bad by any means. Most don't even realize the difference, especially if you don't have the Bose system. Do a search on Ipod and you can use the same method to hook up XM for input. Doesn't Delphi sell accessory so you can clip the controller to the vent or velcro to dash? Take a look at Bestbuy to see if they have other XM controller that looks/fits better. There is a lot of selection now.
  16. Congrats on the new car! Since you got warranty, I'd look for possible warranty covered issues - Any creak in the top or interior? Top may need adjustment or lube. - Any RMS oil leak, some oil may not drop to floor so you'll need to inspect it on a lift or ramp Also consider some maintenance if they haven't been done already - Are brake fluids flushed, needs to be done every 2 yrs - 15k mi service done? If not, better do it soon since it's a 5 yo car eventhough the mileage is low - Waterproof/condition the top w/ Raggtop conditioner or Porsche's conditioner (spray on)
  17. I am sure hardtop glass can be ordered. It'll be expensive from dealer. You may check with some auto glass shop to see if they have it for less.
  18. Try pressing and holding on the window up or down button for 60 seconds. That resets the window regulators on my MB. Try hardtop removal & cycle through softtop operations a couple of times to see if the window issue still happens and if not, reinstall hardtop again. If your car is still in warranty, have the dealer check it out also. Your top controller may be faulty.
  19. Maybe non slip mat underneath the floor mat. those are sold at grocery store or homedepot.
  20. On pre2003 MY cabs, it allows you to put up/down the top when the car is moving at up to 30 mph
  21. ****, that is a lot of money for heated seats. Option from factory was only $400 for 996 I think. Too bad the previous owner didn't have sense to get it. That is something I really want in a cab.
  22. I'd recommend using the factory specified plug. I thought 986 OE plugs are Bosch +2 or +4. Make sure the plugs are tighten correctly and the wires are snug.
  23. Not hear of this. Maybe you can grease up the seat back latch to quiet the noise.
  24. My dealer tried to flash a MY99 and said the computer doesn't offer this option to flash it. They will try a MY02 and let me know if that's possible. They didn't want to try my car for some reason. I'll keep you guys posted on whether I am able to get the control module flashed.
