  1. I call that a good excuse for a Boxstercize!
  2. 914s have a common problem with hot starts. Short fix was to bang on the solenoid. That worked for me the one time it happened. Or let it cool down. Long term was to install relay.
  3. I haven't seen a gas shortage around here. Was in Raleigh/Cary for PCA Octoberfest this weekend and had no trouble filling up with 93
  4.  Welcome! You'll learn a lot trust me. Consider Contributing Member status as it gives you access to TSBs and more.
  5. I'm not re-reading this whole thread again to check, but has anyone mentioned the phrase "matching numbers." I intend to keep my Box long enuf for that to be important. If I live long enuf, that is.
  6. A good number of folks have had problems with the oil fouling the MAF sensor. I use K&N on my old -6 with no problems.
  7. The lights have to be on for the instrument lights to be on. I think Loren or ToolPants posted info on the dash lighting and said maybe Durametric or PIWIS could adjust the brightness range. Try a quick search.
  8. As far as the hardtop goes, they all work up to MY04. The early ones have "ears" on the lower rear. Are you talking about the vent in the dash? Edit - Oh, and Welcome. :welcome: :welcome: :welcome:
  9. :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: Check Sunset (OR) and Suncoast (FL) Porsche for best prices.
  10. You might check their website for troubleshooting help. I just did that recently and saved myself an e-mail or phone call.
  11. I gotta admit, I did not know Durametric could adjust that function. I'm going to try it soon. My problem is the instrument lights are too bright at night even adjusted down to lowest setting. This happens once my eyes adjust to the dark.
  12. My insurance company (USAA) waives the deductible if you get the chip repaired rather than installation of new window. Probably others do too.
  13. You get really low ball trade-in values when the dealer plans to wholesale it out. No Porsche lots around here to check used cars regularly, but some dealers wholesale out vehicles with a certain age or odometer reading. I've heard several say 7 year olds are never on their lot. Its an awful time to sell real estate or high end/high miles vehicles. And a great time to buy either if you have the money and the time to wait.
  14. If the tapping doesn't do it, check the brake line from the caliper back for kinks or pinches. You might try bleeding the brakes to see if fluid comes out. Maybe even release some trapped air. I've never had one freeze open. My 914 has had several rear brakes require rebuilds, but the symptom was failure to release. And it is easier to diagnose when the pads clamp down and heat up the rotor and wheel.
  15. What he said. Road & Track was queried about why their test showed the PCCBs to have less apparent stopping power. The answer was basically as Deanski said. The 80mph and some slower repeated stops were not enuf the bring them up to optimal operating temp.
  16. Changing spark plugs comes to mind.
  17. I also recommend research at TireRack.com. You can read the stats and other people's reviews. Also keeps the dealer honest on pricing. My dealer actually gave me TireRack prices and no shipping charges.
  18. I replaced my 2.0 T P&C with 2.0 Es in my -6. Very straightforward. I am almost certain 2.2 would require machining. But why stop there? 90mm P&C also require machining and give you a 2.5L with the existing crank. No more stressful than a 2.0S, I'd say. Maybe a bit more rotating mass, but I don't think it exceeds the crank's ability to handle. You really want to breath better add the E (or S) heads and E cams. And a E dizzy to put it to better use.
  19. Rsfeller is right about the Bentley Service Manual. Very, very excellent tool that is by my left foot at this computer. At even $350 I thought it was a good enuf deal to have the full set. But at $200 it is a steal. I plan to keep my car for a long time. And actually hope not to have to use the manuals. Thank you Jeff at Sunset. Those with old cars know how information dries up as cars age, and some manuals are reprinted with the same errors they originally had. And some are not reprinted or even remembered. Anyone with a complete set of 914-6 manuals for $200 bucks (or even $350) please PM me.
  20. I was ready to order the manuals at $350 and then saw the RennTech special offer! Loren, Jeff and I exchanged nice words about you and the educational value of RennTech. Anyone with a 986 ought to have a set at that price. :renntech:
  21. I have seen comments about electrics on 914Club.com and/or 914world.com. Both have a lot of 914 postings that range from Subies to 911 tranplants.
  22. This kind of garage flat spotting is generally short lived. Track flat spotting where you lock'em up and ride the slide either is permanent or sometimes can be reduced by shaving the tread if there is enuf of it.
  23. I have used Tire Rack for many years - both for info and tires. This spring needed new rears and naturally checked TR. Called dealer (Leith in Cary, NC) for price and it was about $3/tire more than TR w/o the shipping cost! And I was getting my 4 year service at the same time. And I did not have to risk some kid gouging the rims.
  24. They don't seem to want to degrade the 911 image or elevate the Boxster/Cayman. Personally it is an idea no worse than the original 911E or even 911T. Not to mention the 912/912E. Maybe if they stripped some weight and creature features and created a modern Speedster.
