  1. Anyone have any updates for this? I think this will be the next project I tackle. Looking at mirrors, I think I like the Gentex 453. Seems that mirror is used in many Subarus. It has an amber display to match the 996 dash lights, plus a compass and homelink. I found this DIY which seems to make everything very clear http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutorials/article/297-gentex-auto-dimming-mirror-with-homelink-install/
  2. Any resolution to this? I have the same leak and am trying to decide if it's worth it to replace with a new 99610714751. It seems like it's really hard to get in there. Anyone know how much you have to remove to get at it? It seems like just the airbox is not enough, but I don't see any advantage to removing the throttle and intake plenums as if I was trying to get at the AOS. .
  3. Coils was my thought, but it seems weird that all of a sudden 3 of them would go bad.
  4. Hi all,About two weeks ago I got the car washed at a touchless place near my house I've been to many times before. On the way home at a stoplight it started idling rough (at first I thought I might have blown an engine mount). The engine was shaking the whole vehicle. Under power, it sounded like the clatter of a diesel. Through a check engine light briefly. I got home parked it, tried it the next day, ran perfect.A few days ago I was driving in the pouring rain from Madison to Milwaukee (about 80 miles). After about 60 miles of running great, it suddenly started running rough, and the CEL came on. I got off the interstate and parked it for about 15 min. Started it up again, seemed to run fine, but CEL still on. I got home parked it, and haven't started it since. I plugged in my Durametric and got codes for misfire on cylinders 1,3,5. Car has 76,000 miles, I replaced the plugs (but not coils) at about 60,000. I believe 1,3,5 are all one side of the engine, correct? I do have an IMS guardian, it's no where near going off (it gets progressively louder with more debris) so no one say IMS!Any ideas? Thanks in advance and thanks if you read everything.
  5. Sorry, I've got the hardtop on for winter, so I can't take any pics of what the soft top looks like now.
  6. Try an upholstery shop. Check out this thread on Rennlist: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/996-forum/715004-cabrio-top-coming-apart-inside.html?referrerid=102468
  7. It seems there are two ways to modify the mufflers for a PSE always on effect, depending on where the new pipe is added. Looking at pics of the factory PSE, it seems like the top picture is closer to the routing that PSE uses. Anyone know anything about the differences?
  8. Interesting. If authentic, I could see this giving fuel to class action lawyers in other countries.
  9. The fact that the 101 Boxster book is way cheaper: http://www.amazon.co...rds=101 boxster I feel it is unlikely I will use most of the info in the Bentley book. If I ever need anything not covered in the Pelican book, the Bentley will still be there to buy.
  10. Looks like a good book to have, but I'm waiting for the Pelican 101 996 book. I imagine it will have almost everything I need, at a much cheaper price.
  11. Look for a front diff and half shafts. Also the door sills should say Carrera 4. I once heard of someone trading in a Jeep "Rubicon", which he swapped the axles and t-case from his old 97 Wrangler. The dealer didn't notice untill it was on the lot for sale! Tells you about the quality of a Jeep dealer mechanic - assumed it was a Rubicon just because it had the stickers, and the VIN said it was, didn't have the common sense to notice that the important stuff had been swapped.
  12. Why would the inside of the plenum be painted? Every throttle body cleaner I've seen specifically says to avoid contact with painted surfaces. That would be hard to do if the interior of the plenum was painted!
  13. If you are afraid of braking something, have someone else step on the pedal while you spray. This is the way the valve was designed to operate, so there is basically no chance of breakage. Pushing it with your finger I'm sure was not a designed operating condition.
  14. Nope, no grease points. Light white grease on the clutch if it's squeaking or the doors - but not enough to come off on clothes or carpet.. Thanks for the reply. My clutch does squeak a bit when I depress the pedal. I haven't looked at it yet, but I assume it gets greased at the pivot where it's attached?
  15. Is that part supposed to snap into the arm? My rear sensor just rests there, I'm assuming the part that snaps it into place has broken off. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
  16. I just finished my 60,000 mi service, but have a question about grease/lube points. Specifically, are there any on the 996? On other cars, you typically have points that need to be greased - driveshaft, suspension bushings etc. However, I have not read about any for the 996, am I missing something? Thanks.
  17. I just finished, and agree that this tool makes the job easier for the 5mm allen bolts. Another tip is to use the correct length ratchet on the 3 muffler bolts. Those were difficult to reach with my Craftsman 3/8" drive ratchet (especially the rearmost one), so I made a small (4"ish) breaker bar / extension. The only problem I had was one of my exhaust clamp bolts sheared off, despite being soaked with PB Blaster. No big deal though, I will get a new one from Ace or maybe the stealership. Also, it's kind of funny how I've read about a few people getting the plug socket stuck, then having to fish it out. My roughly 20 year old socket from Sears worked great.
  18. I just did my first oil change, and I agree that the Torx "feels" like it's a better fit than the Allen. However, I beleive that the Torx is more likely to strip the head than the Allen. I would not advise using anything but a 8mm Allen. On another note, I replaced my plug with the LNE one from Pelican, and I feel that this larger anodized plug with a magnet is a very good replacement for the stock plug. I have confidence that this plug is much more difficult to strip than the stock one.
  19. :welcome: That is a small rubber bushing that holds the air cleaner base in place. Wow, thanks for the quick reply. When it's daylight out tomorrow, I'll have to go under and see if I can put it back under the airbox.
  20. Does anyone know how I can find out where this came from? The number on it is 99970326740. It's about 1" long and in profile it looks like a "T" shape with it being mostly a hollow rubber cylinder with a rubber flange on the end, about 1" in diameter. Thanks in advance.
