  1. Sorry to disagree with Loren but you can't use the upper front mount from a C2 on a C4, they are quite different. the C4 has a bearing mechanism that the C2 doesn't have. So you need to match both the model year constraints and the C2 vs. C4 difference.
  2. a buddy of mine just replaced the top on his 2000 Cab. He paid about $450 for the top made with the German Hartz (sp) cloth and a soft rear window. the install at a local shop cost about $750. Nice job and looks grat.
  3. The heat is in the center leather section in the foam pad. Putting in OEM lumbar support would be very involved and expensive. Simple/non-adjustable solution would be to put a folded towel or pad behind this center section. Or a little more elegant would be this inflatable one which you can see is being installed in standard comfort seats in a 996. http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/inseluinairc.html
  4. That is a shame. I bought a pulse sender from Vertex once. they sent the wrong one and when I called them they sent out the right one before I even I sent the wrong one back.
  5. This seal on the drivers side of my car has been torn for several years now. I think the piece costs about $150. To date I have not replaced it.
  6. At 126,000 miles if they are the original rotors then you might need to replace them.
  7. Check the rotors for cracks and for the thickness to see if they are less than the minimum. If not cracked or below the minimum thickness, and they are not too grooved you can reuse them. It has become sort of standard to replace the rotors with the pads but if they are in good condition you can get two or three sets of pads before you replace the rotors. How many miles on the car?
  8. That is the cable drive from the motor to the seat. It has come loose so you can here the motor working but the seat does not move. Happened to my buddy on his car. On power seats there are three or four motors, one for the fore and aft movement, one for the backrest movement and I think one each for the front and back of the seat bottom to raise and lower them. From each of these motors there is a plastic sheathed drive cable. The end of the cable are square and fit into the motor and the gear mechanisms on the seat. There can come loose and/or break. The part number is 996.521.609.00, list price $23.78. You have to take the seat out to get at these motors and cables. Sometimes you can fix the attachment by often you have to replace the drive cable.

  11. Many years ago on my 2000 Cab I went to off the shelf Bosch wiper blades. Recently I splurged and bought a set of the OEM Bosch blades, on of which has a "spoiler" and one of which is curved. So does anyone know which side the curved blade goes on, drivers of passenger?
  12. OK Loren, now you have me going. What are you referring to as the camshaft adjuster bracket?
  13. Yes they will fit, I have a set that came off a later car that I installed on my 2000. If the mufflers come with the brackets on them you will need the brackets off the old mufflers. In 2002 Porsche changed the bolt pattern on the muffler brackets and on the mounts/frames on each side of the engine. It is much simpler to change the brackets on the mufflers than the ones on the engine.
  14. You may find one but it won't be up to date. Porsche stopped providing or contracting with NavTech to update the PCM1 disks years ago. Too bad Porsche did not continue to support the systems, but as far back as 2005 they stopped. And going directly to NavTech won't help as they have not updated the compatible disks independently. After market system in the dash in combo with a radio is one option. A couple of years ago I bought a Garmin GPS which is (was) great, but I don't bother updating that anymore ($60+ very year or so) as my cell phone has a Google GPS map that is basically updated everyday.
  15. I think sugar in the gas causes fuel system problems not cracked cylinder/pistons etc. However if you could prove that it was malicious damage there might be a basis for a claim under your comprehensive insurance coverage. Just a thought.
  16. Here is a video on testing an oil cooler. I did this without all the fancy equipment. I can give you some helpful tips. The thing about intermix is that there can be several possible causes. Also when the engine is running the oil is under pressure and goes into the cooling system but when the engine is turned off the hot coolant is still pressurized and will go the other way through cracks, etc. Take a good look at your oil for any signs of contamination.
  17. I used rubber plugs and compressed air to test mine for internal leaks. Plugged both ports on one side (forget whether it was the oil or coolant side) and one port on the other side. Put in soapy water and compressed air on the side with both port plugged to see if there were any bubbles on the side with only one port plugged. No leaks in mine. I was also advised to heat the cooler up as the leaks can show up only when the cooler is at operating temps. Did this in the oven to 300 degrees and then tested it again. Mine was good. Here is a youtube on this test. There are other videos of this. I think you could do this with all ports plugged and see if any fluid leak out on the exterior.
  18. I have been thinking seriously about the new Michelin PSS (Pilot Super Sports) which are the "replacement" for the PS2. They are more than the Conti DW's but less than the PS2's. If you read the reviews they say they are better than the PS2's, which have been rated one of the best for the 996 if price is not an object (I know I have loved mine) and are supposed to last longer (higher wear rating). I know that Costco offered to order them for me and they were about $1,075 installed after the $70 rebate. Something to think about.
  19. Ok I am going to take a little different approach here. The sizes you are running are not stock to begin with. With 18" wheels the OEM sizes are and revs per miles are as follows (all this is based on PS2's but this info is available for most tires on Tirerack.com). 225/40-18 are 829 and 265/35-18 are 822, so the fronts rev 7 more revolutions per miles or .8%. The PS2 is not made in a 285/30-18 but the 295/30-18 is 832, so the front revolve -3 or .4%. obviously the 285/30-18 would be smaller but I am not sure how much. The 285/35-18 is not made in the PS2. I have run 235/40-18 fronts at 819 and 265/40-18 at 790 for several years with no problems. These are a difference of 29 revs per mile or 3.5%. When you are evaluating these tires you should really look at the size/revs per mile and stay as close to the original as possible, although I have been told that 5% or less is OK. I know that starting in year 2002 (I think) the rears were changed to 285/30-18. I don't know if the PSM or the ABS computers were reprogrammed at that time. By the way the Conti Sport Contact2 seems to be available in 295/30-18 at 827 revs with the 225/40-18 at 825 revs, so only 2 revs per mile different. But they are also much more expensive than the DW's. Hope this may be helpful.
  20. I used small amounts of Blue Loctite when I reassembled by heads, but that was just my preference. I don't know that the factory uses any. My thoughts were that some loctite would prevent (or at least lessen the chance) any bolts from loosening. I wonder what Jake Raby's thought on this are.
  21. For the dealers the most important part of the 60K service is meeting their profit goals. Look at the list and do it yourself. Much of this service is "inspections" looking for problems/items they can charge you for.
  22. Probably not. The offsets are different and you may have a rubbing issue on the rears. Do you have the offsets?
  23. If you are talking about the large one with two 90 degree bends, through 01 it is 996.106.501.56. 02+ is either 996.106831.01 or 02. If you mean the small one at the bottom that has only one 90 bend (and is bigger on one end than the other) it is 996.106.233.51 or 51. If you PM me your VIN I can run it through PET and filter to your car.
  24. These cars are fuel injected so pumping the gas really does nothing. Not like a carbureted car where there are actual pumps in the carburetor. However if there is a fault in the electronic throttle I guess a push on the throttle might do something.
