Intermittent Wiper Hack

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been thinking about doing the intermittent wiper hack in my '99 Boxster. I have been searching for information on this hack but it appears the site that had the instructions on how to do it has vanished. And the site that sold the hack kit has vanished as well. I was wondering if anyone had a guide or anything that would enable me to do the intermittent wiper hack. I would like to do it with the switch opposite the cigarette lighter.

Thanks! :D

So I need to buy:

996 Relay (#996.615.103.00)

Wiper Dial (#996.613.115.00)

Computer CD-Drive Connector (I have one in an old computer, for free)

And then which relay space to I put the relay in?

Were do the wires from the Wiper Dial go? What do I hook them up to?

Thanks!

I'm very interested in anyone's reply to rick3000. I have looked for a description of the hack but can't find it.

Tool Pants link works but the link within that message thread no longer works and therefore the instructions don't exist.

If any one has a copy of the original link, it would be great if you could post it here and then RennTech can keep it safe.

Thanks

I just found this on the internet. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which pins on the connector are 1, 2, 3, and 4. Also, can anyone verify the colors of the wires you tap into.

Thanks! :D

Pin

1 Yellow/Red (Relay Pin 1)

2 Black/Green (Relay Pin 6)

3 Blue/Green/Red (illumination)

4 Brown (ground)

I was looking over at the PPBB Archives.

My understaning of it is that you install the relay and wiper switch, then yout tap pins 3 and 4 to the power and ground. Then you tap pins 1 and 2 into the main wiring harness.

On PPBB they mention a wiring harnes for pins 1 and 2. Does anyone know where this wiring haress goes?

My best guess is that you wire pins 1 and 2 to a longer wire then run it to the fuse panel and tap then into the main wiring harness there? Is this correct?

If anyone has done this mod, I would really appreciate any information.

Thanks! :D

So an UPDATE on this:

I emailed Europa Auto Parts. They said they will be getting the kit in next week, and start listing them on eBay. So they won't send me a copy of the instructions. Personally, I would prefer to do it myself for half the price.

So, I have made up a wiring harness, and I pulled out the relay panel to see what I am up against. I am going in favor of ease and making this fully reversible without making anything permanent. So instead of tapping into the back of the relay panel, I decided to make an extension from the relay panel to the relay.

Does anyone see a problem with placing female plugs on the relay and male plugs in the relay socket, then tapping the wiper knob into the extension cable, and zip-tying the relay next to the fuse panel? It should work, but I want to get some opinions on whether or not you think this a good or bad way to do this.

When I finish with this hack, I will post a link to my instructions. Hopefully my website won't be disappearing anytime soon. :D

  • 3 months later...

I don't like bumping old threads, but there is no point in creating a new one.

Anyway, I finally got around to ordering all the parts to do this hack, from Sunset Imports. ( I also ordered a rear speakers kit, US spec. cigarette lighter, spoiler switch, and a few other things)

I cracked open the relay, and have figured out how to solder all the wires, and hook all this up. It is actually a fairly straight forward hack, once you have all the information you need to understand what is going on. Once I complete the hack, I will post pictures, and DIY instructions on my site, and here.

Hopefully I can find time to do this in the next week! :D

Look forward to seeing the write-up.

I just finished soldering the relay, and got everything back together. After a bit of confusion about which wires go where, I have successfully, added intermittent wipers to my Boxster for under $70. That's $40 less than the eBay kit, and about $25 more than the VW relay (And it is worth it to get rid of the dummy switch).

I will finish the install tomorrow, and hopefully have the DIY up by tomorrow night. The intervals are between about 6-30 seconds, which is great, because if you need anything faster you can just adjust the stalk to the fast setting. In my experience, the longer intervals are where you need intermittent wipers. :D
