I did a search for TPMS and from all the results, nome came from the 996 section. Has anybody successfully installed an after market TMPS on an 996? Mine is a 99 and I am thinking about doing it. I have found several units online but can't decide on what direction to go.

IMHO, TPMS were mandated by Big Brother because the average driver hardly ever checks his tire pressures thus leading to all sorts of negative handling.

I had them in my 335 E90 and hated them as the warning lights with message would come on either with a 1 psi drop in one tire or a slight mismatch in all 4. I had to stop the car and re-initialize the TPMS as the lights and warning were annoying.

If you are a car guy, and I believe you must be as you drive a P-car, I'm sure you check your tire pressures every 2 weeks as a matter of course.

In addition, the cost of these gadgets is over the top and I believe that not all wheels will accept them.

For a car guy they are a total waste unless they come pre-installed as of model year 2007.

I fitted the Orange TPMS to mine. It works very well, and wasn't expensive - I bought direct from Orange Electronics - around $120 IIRC. On the turbo I had to modify the metal valve stems in order to fit the sensors, but that wouldn't be required if you have rubber valves,

It is useful as a safety aid, and for setting the pressures accurately. If you do track days (DE days?) it would be invaluable, as you can monitor temperatures and adjust pressures accordingly.

Richard:

Which specific unit from Orange Electronics did you use?

I got the P409S kit. I just looked up the invoice, and it was $120, plus some extra stem spacers and hollow screws for the metal valves on my hollow spoke Turbo 2s. I posted a picture of the modification on a thread on the 996T forum around January/February time. Again, not required for conventional valves.
