Mufflers Modification - should I?

Hello, I am an owner of a 1999 996 coupe. I've had my car for 4 years now, and I'm looking into add some excitement to my car without spending lots of $. Through a classified website I found this guy in California who modifies the mufflers for $175, and he has a video on youtube that went through his muffler mod.

Here are the pictures of the mod.

What do you think about this mod? If it's not recommended then I'm going to stay away but $175 for this mod to add nice sound to my car is pretty attractive.

That seems like a good mod at a great price. Mine came with headers, modified exhaust, and a K&N intake. The sound is one of my favorite things about the car. The previous owner probably spent alot more than $175.

Fister is a poster on Rennlist. This mod is the "good" one for the 99-01 mufflers. I understand this mod is way better than stock, but still softer than Fabspeed muffler bypass pipes.

I was one of Darin's first customers, and I really liked the work he did....made the car sound fantastic at 1/3rd the price of a Prosche PSE exhuast system. Looking at his product line now, I can see he's made a lot of enhancements since we got together one weekend over a year ago and cranked out one of the first......they sound GREAT. His work is art, and I don't think you can find anything to beat his prices for the results you get. Sure, if you wnat to spend $5K on a Europipe or something similar...but for the price.....unbeatable.

Chuck, good to hear from you again. Yes. you were one of my first 996 modifications. I had been doing only 993's before that. You should stop by and see the shop sometime. I just installed a 2 post lift. The shop should be completed sometime this summer, and I'll be having a get together of some sort to celebrate. You'll definitely get an invite.

Darin: I'll bet your neighbors love your "test runs".... :) I'm looking forward to getting an invited to the GRAND OPENING of the FisterD Porsche exhaust outlet..... Make sure you let me know. It's also great that you've installed a lift...that is almost a must for what you're doing especially if the guys want the install ASAP.... Good going my friend...

I bought the Europipe system for the new TT, so I wont' be a potential customer....but the work you did on my older 996 was outstanding.

nstevo, I say go for it as well. I did mine as well, but I'm on the east coast, so FisterD was not an option for me! But looking at pics of his work on rennlist, I was impressed with the quality of his work. I did get some advice from him though on which stainless pipes to get for the mod. I love the sound on the mod!

Boxster muffler mounts vary by year model somewhat. perhaps it would help if you said what year/engine.

Actually, what I have is the stainless tubing to do the mod on a Boxster, so I'm not sure how important the year is. Is there a big difference in muffler design between the different years?

C2 Cab Tiptronic

darin offers 2 Mods for the 01 C2, a Mod I and a Mod II. Can any Cab owner out there with either Mod tell me how they liked it...was MK I too quiet after a while or is Mod II sound overwhelming for A Cab? Oh yea, I'm 55 but love the sound, just don't want it consistently too loud for normal driving. Thanks ! (yes, i've heard them on youtube).

Bud: I'm 67 and somewhat conservative...I had a long talk with Darin before I went ahead with the mod....and it wasn't too loud for me.... I honestly don't think you'll be disappointed. You can still hold conversations and listen to the radio....at least as well as you can with the wind blowing over a dropped top. He has several iterations now....some a bit more sedate than others.

which mod did you get the I or II...i'm really interested in the louder modII. also how's the interior cabin noise with yop up?

"Yop up"??? I take it that's the new hip-hop word for "top up"?? The muffler Darin did for me was on a 99 C2 coupe...so the top was always up....(being a bit facetious here)....but my ears are ultra sensitive to drone or any harmonic warble...and there was none. I passed on buying several cars just because of the exhaust noise in the cabin. I don't mind the louder exhaust, but not in the cabin. It did have a bark when you got on it, but when cruising at normal speeds....say in the 3K rpm range....there was no drone. I went with the Mark II mod.

Now one has to realize that no matter what system you have, at a certain rpm under a certain load, there will always be a bit of a drone...but the important factor is that it passes quickly and doesn't roost at that rpm where you normally cruise so that it drives you nuts. Some (not all) of the Fabspeed guys will know what I mean. I had a discussion with Stef....the owner of Europipe before I went to their system....and even Stef admitted that regardless of how much you spend...any exhaust system will have a tad bit of drone at a certain point. Anyone who tells you that there is absolutely no drone is blowing smoke.

Have you ever tried improving the internal design (?), like maybe removing a baffle?

I'm just wondering because the stock mufflers are kind of heavy, which was part of the attraction for me to try the bypass pipes (got on eBay from a shop in Santa Ana for $200 -- which was worth it just for the polished tips).

But it's really nice to get ~ 30 lbs off the rear of the car.....

Have you ever tried something like a "glass pack" with bypass pipes? Is that even feasible (?) to maybe cut them and modify a section like that?

I'd be fine if they could be quieted just enough to run at Laguna Seca where they have a kind of low db limit.

Thanks for the link. I'm still thinking of doing the PSE mod, that's fine for the sound, but you've still got all the extra weight back there....

I guess everything's a compromise. :)

One more vote for Darin if you go with the mod....he is a great guy, and does excellent work. I took a 5 hour (one way) road trip up to have him do the work, and it was well worth my time.
