Sorry, posted this to the wrong forum....

I replaced the battery in my C4S with an Interstate in May08. Planning to be away for a few weeks this summer, and everything I've read tells me to put a trickle charger on the car. So, which one? Porsche has 2, but I think the "silver" charge-omatic-II, 980.611.981.00, is the replacement for the "black" maintainer, 980.611.980.00. Both are available...which one is the preferred?

and, do I have this right, you just plug it into the always-hot cig lighter, plug the other end into an a/c, close the door on the power cord, or maybe crack a window open a little bit, and leave it alone.

Yes, just like that..but any of the "smart" outlet chargers will work, and they are a lot less. BMW's for instance is a rebadged Deltran Battery Tender Plus similar to :

Works perfect on my 996. Can't overcharge the battery, cool running, etc, etc.

I have 3 battery maintainers - the original Porsche black charge-o-mat, the Deltran Battery Tender Plus and a new CTEK 7000. I use them all. The newer style Porsche charger/maintainer is the same as the CTEK 3300. The Battery Tender and the CTEK chargers don't come with the cigarette lighter adapter - you have to buy that as an extra. The CTEK 7000 is a little fancier than the 3300. If you buy the CTEK 3300, it's about half the price of buying the Porsche branded version

Any "smart" battery maintainer will work just fine. You want one that stops charging when the battery is "full" and will go into maintenance mode. Plugging into the cigarette lighter is the easiest. The original Porsche one, Porsche or unbranded CTEK ones, or the Battery Maintainer are all decent quality and I can't tell much difference in terms of battery staying fully charged when not driving a car for several weeks.

I found Amazon has the best prices for a retailer for the CTEK ones (just don't expect any customer support), and you can order through the Renntech Amazon store under the Special Offers menu at the top of each page. If you buy the CTEK one, make sure you buy the "comfort connect" cigarette lighter adapter and not the old style. Also, if your car is parked outside, make sure you get something that is waterproof and will stand up to the elements

When I bought our new Cayenne recently, I asked the salesman about solar powered battery maintainers. Audis used to come with them, but don't any more. VW part number 1C0 915 687 is a 170 mA solar cell based battery maintainer that you can use to maintain your battery if there's no power outlet available. Apparently that's what VW uses (or used to) to keep new Beetles' batteries charged while on the ship to avoid dead batteries upon arrival in port

thanks to all for the info. I got the Porsche labeled chargeomatic II at a good price from Jeff Clark up at Sunset Imports. couldn't resist the newer model with the label, but I guess that's my m.o. all the info really helped.

I do have a small Napa trickle charger on a gas emergency generator battery, but ended up getting the "label" for the C4S.

Beetles? well, why dont we do it in the road....?

I just bought a CTEK XS3600 for my MY2003 996 Cab

I have connected the aligator clips directly to the battery. I left the front trunk lid open and manually disconnected the light infront of the spare tyre. The battery is still connected to the car.

I have also left the car unlocked.

The charger has been running 20 hours and it has not switched over to maintenance (trickle charge). Still shows the orange LED (charging)

How long has everyone else experienced to get from charging to maintenence mode?

Also, I could never get the porsche ctek charger to work when plugged into the cigaratte lighter. That's why I ended up buying the CTEK XS3600 and connected it directly to the battery.

thanks

Chucksta

I put the CTEK XS 3600 into stand by and back onto charge (car mode 3.6A)

The maintenance light came on (green LED)

But then after about 5 mins, it went back to charge (orange LED).

I'm now charging my wife's mini cooper (12 V 55Ah) battery. Will see how long it takes to get to maintenance mode (green LED).

Also after i disconnected the charger from the 996, I started the car and voltmeter read just over 14V. First time I have seen this on my car. Is this good or bad?
