Can I remove cats?

The car will run fine, but you will get a CEL unless you plug the sensors into a bypass device. I've seen them around for race cars. When you go to smog the car, you'll have a problem

You could also re-program the DME to use the RoW program (which ignores the 2nd O2 sensors).

Of course, you would not pass any US smog tests.

It maybe illegal in your country - which maybe why a dealer won't do it. You are likely going around your countries emissions laws.

It is all about choosing the DME program. Depending on your model year there are usually 2 to 5 programs to choose from.

i am particullary interested also if there is a better version for my DME,i consider to remove the cat's if it's possibile and also i have read your statment that ROW DME programming will pass over the 2 oxygen sensor fault codes wich US DME display it,i have a p0139 fault code since last week

One warning - if you are in Germany and the car is built to Germany specs then you could damage the cats by running this program change.

Since you are not replacing the DME the old codes and new codes will be the same.

Programming

1. Connect and switch on the Porsche System Tester 2 and switch on the ignition.

2. Select 911 (996) in the Vehicle type menu.

3. Select DME in the Control unit menu and press the double arrow key [»].

4. Select Program control unit in the DME function selection menu and press the double arrow key [»].

5. Select "Read control units" and press the double arrow key [»].

6. Select Program control unit in the Control unit programming menu and press the double arrow key [»].

7. Ensure that all requirements requested on the screen are fulfilled and then press the double arrow key [»].

8. The following message appears on the screen: "Input Vehicle Ident. Number". Input Vehicle Identification Number and press the double arrow key [»].

9. The following message appears on the screen: "Please confirm input" Confirm input with the [F7] key.

10. The following message appears on the screen: "Input old DME programming code" Input DME programming code and press the double arrow key [»].

11. The following message appears on the screen: "Please confirm input" Confirm input with the [F7] key.

12. The following message appears on the screen: "Input new programming code" Input new DME programming code and press the double arrow key [»].

13. The following message appears on the screen: "Please confirm input" Confirm input with the [F7] key.

14. The following message appears on the screen: "Input new immobilizer code" Input immobilizer code and press the double arrow key [»].

15. The following message appears on the screen: "Please confirm input" Confirm input with the [F7] key.

16. The following message appears on the screen: "Select data record" Select data record according to the allocation table and press the double arrow key [»].

At this point choose Euro 2

The control module will now be programmed. Programming will take approx. 5-10 minutes.

Warning: Never interrupt the programming process

17. The following message will appear after the programming time has elapsed: "Programming was completed successfully" Press the double arrow key [»], switch the ignition off and then on again.

This completes programming of the DME control module.

the row dme programm should be stored in the piwis,this is corect?i ask this becuase i did not dee wich operation is to select the row dme programinng to be inputed

my car is us model this is for sure.

also you said that there are several programms for my car to choose.what is your opinion?should the x51 dme be an option?or the newer 05- 997(with325hp)?or the gt3?i'm very curious if this is an option but not sure if they will "fit" into my motronic..

another issue is that i have look over the 2nd sensor for bank 1(driver side wich actually end on passenger side) and surprise.

on both pipes after the exhaust mainfold is only one.is the "before cat "sensor,so there is only 2 sensors and not 4!!

do you think that on my model year is possibile that the 2 nd sensors to be located somwehre else?on the porshe diagram parts i have seen them related to be on the straight pipe after the cat

based on the p0139 code i have made a search and found have found a nice deal for 996.606.178.01 sensor but i can not locate him so far(item number 30 in the image)

i repeat,on the straight pipes after the cat there is no sensor at all!i have just look for 30 min in that area from the cat untill the exhaust canister.

Yes, the programs are in both the PST2 or PIWIS testers.

You can only select from the ones on the list for that model year - so 997 programs etc. There is likely a 3rd party way of putting a newer program in the car but you do not have the newer engine parts in your car.

The sensors and cats on your car will be dependent on the country your car was built for and sold into (and their specific laws).

You have not told me either.

There are engine mechanical changes to make an X51 engine - much more than software.

They will have to look and see what the PST (or PIWIS) shows for options when they re-program it. I don't recall any programming changes for X51 - they will have ro see what options are available.

As you are now a Contributing Member you can read the Porsche Technik books that list the year to year model changes. They are in the Download section and the private forum for Contributing Members.

i agree

just that instead of the after cat sensor( 30 in image ) the pipe is straight with no hole no sensor nothing.

do you think it is possibile to be in the exhaust end canister?

very curious since i get an fault code for this after cat sensor

Would these options be similar for a 99 996 with the 3.4l? If so, what else would the ROW option(S) offer in performance.

I do not recommend this - unless you have a full time track car.

It does seem to be turning into a full time track car. The full cage arrives next week (we'll be installing it just before the Zone 1 event on the 19th)... What changes to the throttle and engine systems map does the RoW effect... i.e quicker throttle response, higher rev limits, ?

On a used DME unit, I am assuming "new immo" code would be the immo code on the used unit (not the immo code on your existing DME if you are replacing it with a used DME). Can anyone confirm this from Loren's procedure above? Thanks in advance.
