My new 986 :)

Hey all. Been tooling around RennTech for a few weeks now...have learned a lot already. Just got into my first Porsche a few weeks ago...have always wanted one, but never thought I'd have the means. It's an 02 "S" with 21,000 miles, Litronics, and stock 17"s (for now). Upgraded the sidemarkers, tails and the shifter (to a B&M) so far. As for the rear plate, it's nostalgic. I've been in the VDub tuning scene for years, but I still consider myself part of the [extended] family.

Nice ride! Same color and model as mine although my interior is black. You should enjoy it!

Quick question, what are you planning to do with the foreign front license plate?

Front plates are required in VA, so I already have the front bumper drilled. Having the euro plate allows me to have something to clip the VA plate onto while Im driving (already had 2 tickets for no front plate on my previous GTI). Eventually, I plan on a Show-n-go retractable plate holder and some color matched bumper plugs. Not a priority right now though.

Oh also, just another quick mod I would do if I were you. Upgrade all your turn signal bulbs to the Phillips Silver bulbs (they have no amber during the day, but are amber when you turn them on), this would include your side markers, rear turn signals, and litronic turn signals. Then taking a soldering iron, you can easily remove the amber lens inside the litronic headlight turn signal bulb area by burning through it with the soldering iron and removing with pliars.

www.xenonmods.com for the bulbs you need.

Here's the difference:

Beutiful! Nice plate too! Thanks for sharing.

I have the silver bulbs all the way around...the only thing I havent done (and am hesitant to do) is the orange filter removal. Maybe one day when my hands are feeling extra steady :)

my previous GTI

As a long time 911 owner and former VW owner, you'll love the move up to Porsche. I just bought a 986 as well and love every minute of it even though I'm a serious 911 guy.

I had a 2007 VW GTI that I bought new just over a year ago. It went down the highway like a million bucks. However, after the drivetrain started making noise at 3200 miles (dealer told me that the clutch disk was probably slipping and the throw out bearing was going - not completely under warranty), the keyless entry was irratic at best, wipers would go on and off at will, headlight washers would also have a mind of their own, horrendous traction control programming to the point of being almost dangerous, and too many rattles that would be fixed for 6 days and then return with a vengance, I divorced myself from VW completely after 129 days and 3423 miles of ownership of that beautiful, but evil GTI.

Wow...sounds like you had a bad run with the GTI. I got a 2006, first one on the lot in Northern VA, and had ZERO problems in 3 years of ownership...no squeaks, no rattles, nothing. Had it modded out pretty well with ECU programming, aftermarket suspension, intake, wheels, short-shifter and lot more...car loved the mods and never gave me a hiccup. The end of the term was coming and I had a choice to refi or trade, so I went with the Boxster. I miss my Dub until I'm behind the wheel of the Porsche. Now I have to wait and see if it's as trouble free as the Dub was

A pic for nostagia's sake:

That's great to hear you had a first year MrkV and didn't have any problems. Your V Dub looks good in UG. VW sure got it right in the styling department for the GTI (hats off to them for putting plaid in a modern car interior!). They are great looking affordable performance cars that can be modded quite easily for tangible gains in hp and torque.

I'm pretty sure I got a bad one... It (the '07 GTI) sat on the dealer lot for over a year before I bought, even though it had only 80 miles on it when I took delivery (and I put 40 of those miles on it while test driving). I would bet after a winter of moving that car to plow the lot time after time, it probably took a toll on the clutch... Those lot boys and sales staff can be hard on cars if they have to move them a lot to clear snow.

Good luck with the new Boxster!
