My porsche 996 wont start

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, ive been reading some of your suggestions and im having the same problem. I purchased a porsche 911 996 year 2000 I dont have the remote control only was given the key. Im having problems starting the vehicle, I have power to the starter and I hear the click of the carborator opening and clicking but wont fire up to start the engine. At first i thought I had no spark going to the coils, but I do have spark. Ive checked the grounds they seem to be okay, as well as the clutch.

Ive tried turning with the key no luck, I manually tried to start the solenoid it tries to turn over but wont ignite. Do you think I need to demobilize the alarm perhaps to get it to start, or is there a reset on the DME i might have to take off the switch and plug it back in. It could be bad gas as well..the car has been sitting in a garage for 6 years, before I took on the project. When I place the key into the ignition switch the key turns the ignition lights up but engine does not start. When I manually try do start it up by turning the solenoid over it tries to start it turns over but no roarrrrr...

Something is telling it not to fire...any possible suggestions guys...im REALLY STUCK.

Thanx guys I really appreciate any help I can get

Gavin

Is the engine turnin gover with the starter? If not could be bad starter, bad battery or bad ground strap.

If the engine is turning over but not starting it could be a bad pulse sender, but that is only guessing. Do you have a Durametric or access to one. This would give you codes that might help.

The engine is not turning over with the starter when key is placed in the ignition. I can hear the click of the carborator when I place the key in the ignition and try to turn it over, all the instrumental lights, ac, headlights all turn on...but the engine does not want to ignite. When I manually try to start the engine with the solenoid the vehicle tries to start but I dont get no roar. The car has been sittin for a long time, im going to replace and add new gas and try that. The grounds are all fine. I dont have an alarm remote could this be an issue...Do you think I might have to demobilize the alarm?

I replaced the battery with a brand new one. Unfortunately I do not have a Durametric, so I dont have any codes.

I really appreciate your help Dharn means a lot to me pal, any suggestions are much appreciated.

I recently had a similar problem with my car. The starter would click, but not turn over the car. First I replaced the battery with a brand new battery. Did not fix it. Then I replaced the electrics in the ignition/key switch. Did not fix it. Then I put in a rebuilt starter, Did not fix it. Then I got a brand new starter. Did not fix it!!!

Then, at the suggestio of another owner, I checked the ground strap on the right side of the engine, goes from the front of the head to the body. Took off the strap, cleaned all the surfaces, reinstalled it. PROBLEM GONE!! So the first thing I would do it to take off the right rear tires and check the gound strap, easy to do and a cheap fix if that is it.

Just sold the rebuilt starter.

WHAT?????? No DME. Where did you buy the car? And didn't you test drive it before you bought it. This is one of the strangest stories I have heard in a while. You could also try some of the wreckers, Oklahoma Foreign, DC Auto, LA Porsche Dismantlers (be creful of these guys).

Sorry but you bought the car without ever seeing it run or driving it? :o Is this a serious post?

LOL, yes this is a serious post. No the vehicle was a salvage title, and I took it on as a project vehicle. Im more knowledgeable with the older porsches 75-80's. This is my first porsche 996 carrera, it wasnt running when I purchased the vehicle it was more of an ez fix than anything else.

Dharn, ive done business with Oklahoma Foriegners the guy's name is Gary, hes a pretty good guy. LA Dismantlers lol on the other hand they've been pretty good with me. Im actually doing business with these guys as of the moment as I had to purchase several parts from them to rebuild this porsche im working on.

Yah just my luck...NO DME, i'll try purchasing one and see if I can get one. That will solve my problem ehh Guys lol ;)

I have a handicap vehicle lol

Hey Dharn, do you think when I get the DME i will have to replace the mobilizer and key sabb and get the whole complete unit of a wrecked or salvage car in order to make my vehicle start? If so then im guessing if I have the complete set DME+mobilizer+key sabb from the same year I wont have to get the vehicle reprogrammed by the dealer. If I just purchase a DME and use my own mobilizer alarm + key sabb then Im guessing I would have to get the vehicle reprogrammed to make that DME compatible with my vehicle.

Thanks boys once again. YES THE WIERDEST STORY ANYONE PROBABLY HAS EVER HEARD LOL...Just my luck IT HAD TO BE ME LOL :(

sounds more like he is trolling for some info (on a stolen car)...WTF is a key sabb?

Actually not as far fetched as you think --- I am dealing with a similar issue with a project car as he is.

I was a bit nieve about buying the car that was not running at the time. So I didn't check the electricals.

Fortunately -- or not -- we finally had a ton of rain in late September and I had the car sitting outside.

The floor was soaked -- that started me down the path of checking the source, than pulling out all of the carpet

only to find the IMMOB (which looks like a DME unit on the surface of things) was literally disintegrated.

I continued to pull the entire interior out -- than the convertible top, top liner, roll bar and every piece of

padding in the car. Found the source. A combo of a torn convertible liner, clogged drains, and missing

liner to drain tubes.

I'm now working to get back to even being able to start things -- I don't even get to the point

of the solenoid clicking with a new (used set) DME/IMMOB/FOB.

I'm sure I'll be working on this for the rest of the year...... (if its only that long!)

So I believe that this is a plausible story -- he just lacks terminology and experience with these

model year Porsches.

cheers,

Mike

Thank You Mike...yes your right Im not very informed with the terminology. Im actually learning as I go along. When I called the dealer they told me that the DME is suppose to be on driver side, But when I removed the seat the immobilizer was there instead part number 996 618 260 07. When I removed the passenger seat all the wire's were lose and there was no brain, the DME wasnt there. Which even the dealership found strange as its suppose to be the immobilizer on the passenger side and DME on the driver side, unfortunately for me was opposite. Maybe for certain vehicles it has dme and immobilizer like that.

I bought the car as a project car. It was salvaged, and got a real good deal. When I went to look at the car the car wasnt starting and hasnt been started for almost 6 years. A friend of mine who is a mechanic inspected the car and told me everything engine wise was fine and he could get the car to run no problem, So we took a chance and bought the car. After months repairing the vehicle.. The car Looks BEAUTIFUL..put a nice GT3 kit on it..yELLOW and black interior..the car looks amazing. Only issue we were having with the car was the car wasnt starting. Once we checked all our sources..we found out the DME was missing...its a very expensive unit.

Mike what I found out today was you need to buy the DME, the mobilizer, and the key remotre/ignition switch thing to make it all work as one complete unit. The DME part number 996.618.605.00 is for years 2000-2001.

Im not sure if I can just buy that DME and use my own immobilizer.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY..yes odd and strange but its true...I can show you pictures as proof as well lol (NOT A Stollen car and trying to fish answers lol)...Its just my luck...its really ****** lol

Thanks again, the saaga continues

uhhh...wrong again...and any dealer SHOULD know where the DME is...sorry that's two wrong guesses...third one and you're out...LOL

"You can replace the DME without replacing the immoblizer"

Dharn im sure you can purchase a DME used one from another car, however that DME wont work with the immobilizer. Im not sure this is what someone told me. If I buy a DME from the dealer off course I wouldnt have to replace the immobilizer. The DME from the dealer is $2500. And I dont want to go that route as it is to expensive for me that way.

Im trying to find a car salvaged or someone parting one out. And see if I can purchase the DME and Immobilizer, and key remote so all three units function as one complete unit. Rather than using my own immobilizer and buying another DME from another car, as Iam affraid it might not work and read off of one another.

Im not sure, Dharn is there a way to work around it...if I can just buy the right DME off another car with the right part number and just use that instead of replacing everything. ( I found a guy who has a DME and key ignition but doesnt have the immobilizer, but I have the mobilizer will this work?)

Any help would be great as im getting confused. I wish it was just simple and I could just replace the DME rather than trying to find all three units to work accordingly
