OBD2 diagnostic port not working

Recommended Posts

hi guys, last week i took my MY2000 boxster s to a local auto zone to have my CL diagnosed and after they plug in their OBD2 to the port and nothing. has anyone experienced that problem before? if the port doesn't work, then the only way to find out my CL code is taking my car to my shop and it will cost me around $90 to have it diagnosed. please help.

hey loren, you are absolutely correct. i took my car to a different auto zone and they had no problem reading it.

now i got 2 error codes, P0133 and P0153.

i believe they are bad O2 sensors, both before the catalytic converter and on driver side and passenger side respectively.

so does that mean they are identical O2 sensors, bosch part #15182? or are they different?

please let me know so i can proceed to order them.

thank you

P0133 Signal Period for Oxygen Sensor Ageing, Bank 1 – Above/Below Limit

P0153 Signal Period for Oxygen Sensor Ageing, Bank 2 – Above/Below Limit

Possible causes:

– Oxygen sensor ahead of TWC

– Wiring (oxygen sensors exchanged)

I would clear the the faults and then if they come back replace the sensors.

Kind of odd to lose two at the same time... IMHO. So I would check for damage or if they have oil on them before replacing them.

ok loren. will do. i will clean them first and have them check it again.

but are they the same O2 sensor and is my bosch part number correct (bosch part #15182)?

Clean them - not the sensors. DO NOT spray anything on the sensors - that will kill them for sure.

MY2000 S with around 106,000 miles. no i don't have an oiled air filter either. i heard about the problem the oil from the filter can cause. my friend's 996 had that problem. is there some other problem may cause the CL P0133 and P0153?

how should i clean the O2 sensor?

Those fault codes have nothing to do with the MAF.

The sensor locations are correct. One other thing to check is the charging system for over volts as I've had a few cases over the years where it has shortened the service life of the sensors by burning out the heating elements or leaking voltage back through the signal wire to the DME.

ok, now that i have both O2 sensors replaced. will the cel reset (turn off) itself?

i have heard that after 3 complete cycle of engine start up and cool down, the cel should reset itself. is this correct?

or do i need to take it to the shop have them reset it for me?

  • 7 years later...

My OBD II port seems to have stopped transmitting on my 986. I have a drive tracking device that stays plugged into the OBD port and it stopped recording data as of 10 days ago. I tried connecting my 2 different OBD readers which have always worked and neither one can establish a connection to the port now. Cigarette lighter plug is still working - I had read where the OBD port and cig lighter plug might share a fuse. Any ideas why I can't get a reading from the port?
