The M535 Unit is the central alarm control unit, also called the Immobilizer (Immobiliser in the UK). That is also what some refer to as "the brain" if they are referring to a unit that has to be reprogrammed. They are not talking about your DME (Digital Motor Electronics?), which is the car's ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and which is located inside the rear trunk of your Boxster, at the top left corner of the firewall.

Yours should have the same markings as this one:

The new immobilizer does have to be reprogrammed before the car will run.

Regards, Maurice.

Do you think that it will be better to buy one from Pel Parts and have it programmed. I figure, $400.00 plus programming, a new unit would be better than a used one and the part in the trunk should be fine.......any thoughts....thanks for the fast reply

zman:

It's unlikely that the DME in the trunk was affected, and it certainly doesn't suffer from the same handicapped location as the central alarm control unit (which Porsche somehow managed to put at the absolute lowest point on the floorpan of the Boxster).

The retail price of these units (according to the price search here) is £391. Would it not be worth trying Sunset (Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost link), as they are usually cheaper?

As Loren says, you need to find someone who can program it correctly first. If you end up having to go to a dealer you might find they may not look favourably (price-wise) on programming a unit you have bought elsewhere.

The dealer here has one for 391.00...not bad....they are 60 miles away....I have roadside asst....they love me....Called them and said I need a tow from Pensacola Fl to Mobile AL....they were no at first...explained that it was about 1 hour away....at lease I gat a laugh from that....it will done Saturday. Dealer said that the key fob sometimes won't program, which means another 150.00...love the dealer... I will have drain holes for the next rain storm
