Immobilizer issues?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently purchased a 98 Boxster, 2.5 base with Tiptronic and 48,000 miles.

When I purchased it, the power windows do not work with the console switch. They do go down slightly when the doors are opened and back up when closed. That is their only movement.

Also, I have been having intermittant starting issues where I turn the key , all lights come on, everything seems to work (except the windows) but the car starter won't crank. I have read everything I could find in this and other forums. I have traced all circuits involved with both the windows and the starter. All fuses were checked. The electrical portion of the ignition switch was replaced with new. I have checked all faults with a Durametric. There were no faults with the alarm module. The only fault with the DME was the 3- Supply voltage fault which was cleared. It was related to the fact that the battery had been disconnected. There are currently no faults displayed on the durametric.

I had removed the Alarm ECU and verified that it was dry and that all connections were clean. I used DeOxit on all connectors as I replaced them. (This did correct an Air Bag fault I had.)

My Question- Do these two problems indicate a problem with the immobilizer even though there are no faults shown on the Durametric? Is there any way to further Diagnose these problems?

Thanks for any help.

Checked the fuse on the immobilizer?

With a multimeter, you can do some troubleshooting like jumping and checking the starter relay to see if you have problems on the relay and thr high current side, or the DME is not even trying to activate the starter relay.

Did you actually remove and inspect the window console switches? No loose connections?

Have you tried shorting the clutch pedal switch?[/quot

I had the switches out and checked continuity. I used deoxit on all connections. Also checked continuity to door connectors.

Checking the clutch switch would have been my first check if it had one-Tiptronic

You will likely need a Porsche diagnostic tool for further diagnosis. Find a shop with a Porrsche PST2, PIWIS, or PIWIS 2 tester.

That will be my next effort if I can find an honest reputable shop in my area- Upstate NewYork- Capital District

Thanks

Well,
I have an appointment with the most reputable shop I could find in the area. I have had them work on my Alfa in the past and they do have considerable Porsche expertise. Talking to their Porsche expert, he said that they would basically trouble shoot just the way I have already and said that my problem is not related to the
Alarm Module as he has never seen one fail in that manner. I will find out Tuesday. I am reluctant to take the car to the local Porsche Dealer because I have heard horror stories about their service, but I might be forced to try them.

In the meantime, does anyone have a  wiring diagram of the internals of the window motor itself? Or has anyone got an old unit that they would be willing to open up and either photograph the wiring or sketch how it is internally wired?

I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Thom, Thank you very much for responding to my request.I too have this diagram, but what
I am looking for is the internal wiring of the motor itself. In other words, what's inside the box where you see A1 through A8?

Thank you for your help.

That does not exist - at least Porsche does not offer it.

In many case it may even be proprietary information of actual motor manufacturer.

Here is an update on this subject:

On September 6 I wrote I have an appointment with the most reputable shop I could find in the area. I have had them work on my Alfa in the past and they do have considerable Porsche expertise. Talking to their Porsche expert, he said that they would basically trouble shoot just the way I have already and said that my problem is not related to the Alarm Module as he has never seen one fail in that manner. I will find out Tuesday.

When I took the car to this shop, the number one item that I asked them to do was a mandatory NY State inspection as it was overdue. Long story short- they said (2 days later) that it wouldn't pass inspection because it wouldn't "talk" to the NY State Inspection computer and that was mandatory. They also said they couldn't see anything wrong with the windows and just asked me to come and get the car.

I then made an appointment with Foreign Car Service Shop #2 who also worked on a lot of German cars. They had no problem getting the car inspected and did a general service on the car. They said that the power window problem was due to a faulty alarm module and that I would have to take it to the Dealer to get it replaced.

The only "local" dealer is one which I just will not use for personal reasons. Can anyone recommend a shop that can replace the module and program it within reasonable distance of Albany, NY?

The other possibility, which I have not given up on, is to "bypass" the alarm input to the window motor so that the windows did work exclusive of the alarm system.

There is a yellow/gray wire going from the alarm module to the power window motors (terminal 2?) Can anyone tell me what is the condition of that terminal when the windows do function with the console switch? At that terminal, it would most likely be connected to ground, have 12 volts applied, or 12 volts removed (not likely) when the alarm module is telling the motor that it is alright to operate.

It may have some other form of "signal" but it is not likely that this is the case.

Thanks for your help.
