window cable snapped?

Boxster S from 2000


Yesterday i heard a bang when i was lowering tha passanger window. After that the window wont move by pressing the button but i hear the motor working, the same when i open/Close the door.

The window it self can be moved by hand.


The question is what to order?

Is the regulator enough, or do i need the whole setup?


Is this what i need?

You should just need the window regulator. The inner door panel is covered by a membrane. You'll need to peel that off very carefully if you intend to re-use it. Otherwise a new membrane will also be needed to avoid water seepage into the cabin.


Naturally, care is needed with the airbag in the door.

WINDOW LIFT CABLE / REGULATOR PORSCHE 996 / BOXSTER 986 (PART NO. 99654207504 / 99654207604)

I think you should replace it.  It is probably 16 years old. 

The door lock mechanism is another high failure item inside the door. It's not related to your current snag but there is a circuit board that the soldered wires break as the wire flexes each time the door is closed. It can cause lots of intermittent problems such as window not going down ½" when handle lifted. 

If you've had this happen you could replace that while you are in there. 

I'm speaking from experience.

Right, the Cable was snapped so im gonna order the parts amegarth mention above.


I do have one question!

I had to work outside and its Cold i Sweden, so the membranes glue was stiff and impossible to remove.

On my new membrane the glue dosent feel very sticky, does it need heat when i mount it?

Not the best weather conditions to work in!


A hairdryer should do the trick for softening the adhesive enough for it to stick.


Take it slowly, ensuring that everything is aligned and the window is working properly before you install the membrane. Marking the exact position of the window with bits of tape before you start removing the broken regulator makes things much easier.

Well thats the conditions, minus 1 /C :(

A did the left brake rotor and pads to and gonna take the right one tomorrow.

And i will order the lift Cable/regulator this evening.


and i  will be indoor when i remove the old glue and mount the membrane for sure!!

a small update, after i did the left roter and pads i Went out for a drive to condition the new pads and rotors.

For about 2 years there have been a rattle coming from the door/top area. It has been raly hard to locate and it only rattles at 2000 and 3000rpm.

With the door panel of, there is no rattle anymore :)

I totally agree. Found out the hard way that cheaper generic window regulators are cheap for a reason. I could probably dismantle a door in my sleep now.

Success :)


But was a bit of a hassle.

I had a spare membrane but the glue on that on was not as sticky as i thougt it needed to be so i ordered one more.

That a good choise cause the new one was Realy sticky.

The old glue i removed with a hot airgun and a knife.


All the parts are Porsche parts, when i opened the box for the regulator i saw that the cable was off the green wheels. (correct name?)

It was not easy to get the wire on to the wheels even if i compressed all the springs.

First i tought something was wrong because it was impossible to get it over the guide that steers it on to the Wheel but with some force i managed.

After a test mount i took it out again cause it made alot of terrible noise as if the Cable was off the wheels again but i looked ok.

I mounted it again and moved the regulator upp and down a couple of times and the noise was gone :)


Its gonna rain in a couple of days and that would be the real test to see if the membrane have a good seal.
