  1. Clean out your radiators, my guess is they are filthy. m
  2. Look for the dual variocam actuators on the side if it is a factory 3.6
  3. Unfortunately 99 and 04 engines are not interchangeable. The 99 has a mechanical throttle cable, single variocam, different instrument cluster, different wiring harness, your HVAC, ABS, and cruise control is not compatible. They have different DMEs. You might be able to get one to work -- but it won't be easy. Mike
  4. If the IMS bearing was giving out and the IMS was wobbling -- it can damage the far end near the oil pump -- you really can't do anything to inspect that short of tearing it down. If the debris is coming from your rod bearings -- there isn't a way to inspect without tear down. If the debris is coming from chains -- then you might be able to inspect with a boroscope. Fixing will likely be a tear down. One can argue if you can source an engine without having to pay a core charge -- then drive this one till it breaks -- then buy a new to you engine. You are right tho -- you cannot sell it as "healthy" until you can prove over multiple oil changes -- there is no metal (which looking at your IMS/drain plug) is not likely to happen. You're not going to be any worse off. If you don't care about damaging this engine further -- you can run it for a few hundred miles and then check the oil plug and filter. Heck you could source yourself an engine -- prepare it and then swap it out. Then tear this one down, rebuild it, and recoup some of your costs. nothing is pretty I fear -- but you have options. Mike
  5. Do not start this car for any reason until you get it back in timing. I would check timing again. I would also boroscope those cylinders and make sure there is no valve strike. Please find someone that knows these engines. Mike
  6. Sorry to hear of your loss. 3.4's with Engine issues show up a lot. Your engine has value. Whether you wrap it in a new skin for yourself -- or find someone that needs -- you should be able to recoup some of that loss. M
  7. There is a hose that runs either under or alongside the engine from the waterpump outlet to the Tiptronic in a Boxster -- I assume the 996 is similar. I would follow the trail to see where it is coming from -- the leak is probably small and is travelling to the lowest point before dripping below. m
  8. What year car? Could be idle control valve? variocam kicks in about 3K rpm. Mike
  9. They should be able to do a leak down and listen for where, if any air is leaking from. This will help determine if its intake, exhaust, or some sort of cylinder issue. They could also boroscope that cylinder to see if they see any damage to the piston. good luck, mike
  10. Well if you sourced another 99 996 key, immob and dme -- AND did the rewire -- you should at least get it to start. You can then figure out some piggy back system to handle the e-gas and vario-cam. It might all be cheaper/easier to find a chap with a 3.4L, then sell the 3.6L. Good luck -- (what a mess) Mike
  11. That's a decent price for the TT -- and what feels like a great price for your Boxster. I think I would jump on it. Mike
  12. I drove a 2000 Boxster S as a daily driver for 4 years. 95% of the time it was perfect -- had to juggle cars with the wife once a month or so when I needed more than 2 seats. Mike
  13. If the CPS is monitored while running -- AND it is the cause of the non-started -- I would think you would get engine running issues. In my experience, when the CPS has gone south -- it tends to lead to starting issues only. Typically hot start issues. NOTE: I'm a shade tree Boxster mechanic at best -- but I have seen 2 CPS go out on two different cars. Neither exhibited running issues -- just eventually failure to start. That is why I'm not convinced that is is continually monitored but I have no real evidence. Mike
  14. Can you check that you are getting a spark when cranking (but not firing?) Experts: After starting is CPS still used? Is there anything duramatic that can be monitored? thanks, Mike
  15. My understanding is that the motormounts are lowered something like 1/2-1" -- and it's literally a spacer. So not as radical as is might seem. Mike
  16. Hard to see with your pictures -- but here is a couple photos of a cracked cylinder liner to compare. This intermixed -- especially when warm. Also I believe this started as cylinder misfires when warm progressively getting worse. Mike
  17. I'd do the CPS first -- way cheaper, probably an easier fix too. Seen this at least 3 times. then if you still have problems -- you can check the fuel pump pressure. Mike
  18. Check your Idle control valve... I had this go out on a 99 996. It would hunt idle and occasionally stall coming to a light. Replaced it and all was good. No codes. However, there is a possibility that its running rich or something and inadvertently setting your MAF off. Mike
  19. Got a new to me -- 20K mile 2008 CTT. So far so good..... However I have this very annoying drivers side creak. Left hip side. I'm not a little guy -- but not a big one either 6' 185# -- No idea of the PO. I've had it about 2 months now and for the last 3-4 weeks the drivers side seat creaks and groans around the corners. Not track style turns, but simple everyday driving. Any pointers before I start getting to drastic measures. thanks, Mike
  20. Such a fine sight to see...... Glad you'll be back home in Texas in no time. Mike
  21. Found I have the same problem -- any updates? did the heating ultimately work? mike
