  1. I have yet to see any halogen to be better than xenon. i thought that's a std item on 997. guess not. it definitely can be retrofited into a 996 so I am sure it'll work on 997. Go do it, you won't regret it. It should be plug & play as the ballast is part of the xenon. it really looks much better and easy on the eye at night. i can't imagine a $80-90k car without xenon. people that save a few hundred bucks makes me wonder sometimes.
  2. What are you trying to do? Are you trying to get ipod connected to your HU? If so, Becker sells a cheap kit that uses the CDC input. You'll lose your CDC usage but get IPOD input instead.
  3. i give it 30 sec or so just enough for the oil to get thru the engine (this should take much less time actually). Manual says no warm up is needed. take it easy until car warms up to about 180 degrees. that's more important.
  4. You may try to see if cpo warranty will cover it. oem cf often crack or delaminate under the sun.
  5. i think it can only be shipped freight. usually a few hundred. check w local dealer to see if they have any take offs. They often have them a few years ago since people return lease car with it or don't want it when bought new.
  6. universal covers are cheap, esp those that are single ply. if you just need it for indoor, it'll do the job fine. for outdoor, you want something with either 3-4 ply or a really good thin material to block moisture and allow breathing. be sure to clean the paint well by either washing or using a detail spray. dirty car should not be covered as the cover will scratch the paint easily. just fyi.
  7. compare L and R sides. if it's really a problem, then you'll need to replace the belt. this requires removal of the interior rear quarter panel and should take 1-2 hr at most depending on your experience level. there are lots of clips involved in removing the panel. this may be a good time to upgrade to red or yellow belt. if you stick w black belt, look for used ones on ebay for cheap too.
  8. u sure ur chking it correctly? do u have a leak or someting at the wheel? brake fluid should be full or else you'll get soft pedals in addition to warning light. since car is under warranty, i'd have dealer look at it too.
  9. Not sure about real life but EPA mpg rating for C4 and C4S is lower than C2 esp on highway. Not sure what's the weight difference between C2 and C Regardless what's said, I would prefer C4S for looks and take it any day over C2 if money is no object. C4S are also harder to find.
  10. C2 should have a spare tire which has an opening for the windstop. C4 has a separate windstop bag.
  11. C2 is a little more fun being that it's a RWD. C4 is better if you live in the snow belt. Maint on C4 will be slightly more to replace transfer case oil. I would not worry about this little extra item though. C4 is less fuel efficient. If you do not drive in snow or don't live in snow, I would get a C2 instead. If you do get a C4, try to get a C4S with the wide body and turbo look. It's the most sexy 996 NA out there.
  12. how can the oil clean up the engine? it is supposed to lubricate and not clean. i understand there is detergent chemical additive to the oil but if it's cleaning so effectively, you wonder if it's lubricating as well. i've heard lots of good things about RP as engine oil. not so much on RP gear oil though. be careful what you use for tranny. i'd stick w approved stuff.
  13. look for oil leaks, such as RMS - do a search on it if you don't know what it is. coolant expansion tank is common to leak, expensive labor tranny is another. ppi can be done at most dealers. you may buy the car thru the dealer if you want to fork $2-3k for a 2 year CPO warranty since you are already getting a PPI. By doing this, the seller sells the car to dealer which then marks it up as CPO by a couple grand and sell it to you.
  14. Kenwood or Eclipse have good double DIN units offering touchscreen nav. you may want to add BT or XM also. Pioneer has only flip screen I think.
  15. these panels have foam pressured formed btwn the leather and plastic. You may want to try a good upholstery shop to see if they can do anything. Does leaving the car under the sun for a day do anything?
  16. replacing parts require proper diagnostic which isn't always billable. diagnostic requires experience too. this is what boards offer. most owners do not want to pay .5-1 hr of labor for diagnostic. however, if they are told the whole assembly needed replacement, they won't argue. this applies to warranty repair too. 99% of people love cars under warranty bc they think they saved thousands in repair costs. in fact, their repair cost should be much lower had the dealer fix the part broken instead of replacing them. i am sure most of engine and tranny replacement are unnecessary. dealer just don't want or know how to fix them.
  17. this is how dealer guys get fed. ur fix were easy and u were quoted worst case replacement bc dealer won't know until they take stuff apart. Most of time, they'll replace whole thing instead of small parts to make money and simplify repair.
  18. $400 part? I don't think so. OEM one is a lot more. Even the GAHH with the new glass back window is about 700-800 + shipping. $3.5k is a lot. However, dealer offers 2 yr warranty which is great since adjustments to fix rattles will be under warranty. My advice is to get full replacement value and do the GAHH glass window at a reputable shop. PA upholstery is pretty good, there are a few more in SF bay area. Premier upholstery in Sunnyvale is also good. Avoid Bascom in San Jose.
  19. What color is the foam? If it's charcoal, it could be coming from your vent in the interior. On a 986, it's a cinch to remove the vent so you can either remove or reattach the foam. The foam is supposed to secure the vent duct and direct airflow.
  20. you can also get battery tender at any auto parts stores or motorcycle shops. some of them are dirt cheap $15. i plug mine in all the time when not driven weekly.
  21. I wasn't able to find a DIY on how to remove the headliner on a soft top. I have an 02 cab. The cross bow straps near "b pillar" rattles. Any how to on fixing this? Dealer fixed it under warranty about a year ago but it's making noices again.
  22. 0-40 offers more efficiency and HP compared to heavier oil. 40 is heavy enough when engine is hot. i'd consider going to 15-50 for a turbo or SC car but not necessary for NA. Your 5-40 isn't that much thicker than 0-40 when temp is warm or hot.
