  1. If they did not replace the clutch release lever with the new style, this may be causing the problem. Have them pull the TSB 3041.
  2. You have all the tools your need to determine if the MAF is the problem. Have your looked at the airflow rate and the intake temperature reading and the engine load? Why replace something when you you haven't determined it is bad? It is also common that the contacts on the connector get oxidized and a good cleaning may correct the problem.
  3. The car should not overrun 1000 RPM, check if the throttle cable tension is not too hard, he needs a little "play". Since you don't have a throttle cable, don't waste too much time looking for it. :P It is normal to have a slightly higher idle when the car is first started from cold. It should only last a short while and then drop back to normal.
  4. Fully open at around 94C. These valves are not percise and can vary several degrees up or down. One thermostat may begin opening at 80C and another at 85C. The full range of the valve movement is anywhere from 5C - 10C from closed to fully open.
  5. If you have never had the coolant changed (regardless of what coolant is in the engine), I suggest you change it. Remember that acids and debris are accumulating.
  6. If they will do it for a total cost of $600 (parts and labor) or less, then it would be worth it. Otherwise, they are just trying to make a quick buck.
  7. No, do not rap the wire around the barrel lug. Simply "twist" the wire like a braided rope. As if you are screwing it into the black cable. Twisting it will slightly shorten the cable with each full turn. You need to make sure you hold the wire while reinserted the lug in the bracket so it does not untwist.
  8. Do not remove the black cable from the connection to the throttlebody. Remove the wire (which has a crimped lug on it) from the valve bracket. This is the part I suggested twisting to shorten it. However, I wonder if you have other problems if it is only opening 53%. Make sure something is not blocking your pedal.
  9. Your goal is to keep the engine from getting to that temperature in the frst place. You can do my fan mod which allows you to turn the fans on full speed with a flip of a switch and you will be able to control engine temps in stop and go driving. Radiator Fan and Engine Compartment Fan Switch Mod The 3.4 996 runs extremely hot when driving around town in temperatures higher than 75 degrees. This mod is a way to reduce coolant temps back to a safer level, helping to reduce oil temps and improving performance. The mod consists of installing a switch that will allow you to turn on the high speed radiator fans at any time, while maintaining the automatic operation of the fans. We do the same for the engine compartment fan. Radiator Fans Connect a wire to the ground (Pin #85) of the 2 high speed fan relays located on the relay carrier located in the driver’s side foot well. The relays are #20 and #22. Feed this wire to where your switch will be located. Connect the wire to one side of the switch. Connect another wire from the other contact on the switch and then connect the other end of this wire to a chassis ground point. With key on, this switch will now immediately turn on both radiator fans providing maximum cooling. When you turn the key off, the fans will continue to run for about 5 seconds until the relay shuts down. Your fan operation remains normal when the switch is off. Engine Compartment Fan Connect a wire to the ground of the relay located in the relay carrier behind the passenger seat, driver’s side. Relay #8. . Feed this wire to where your switch will be located. I simply fed the wire along the driver’s side of the car and under the door sill. Connect the wire to one side of the switch. Connect another wire from the other contact on the switch and connect the other end of this wire to a chassis ground point. With key on, this switch will now immediately turn on the fan drawing air into the engine compartment. When you turn the key off, the fan will continue to run for about 5 seconds until the relay shuts down. Your fan operation remains normal when the switch is off. This mod helps keep the engine compartment much cooler when driving around town and is particularly beneficial to any engine that draws its intake air from inside the engine compartment. It will also help keep engine temps down. If you are adventurous, you can automate the operation of these switches so they will switch off at a specific speed, or operate when vacuum is present only, etc. You can choose any style switch you want and even use Porsche switches.   10. Is the noise louder when you remove the oil cap? This might help id whether the sound is internal or not. Sure sounds like external due to the level of the noise. Check for tools dropped in bay as well as all componants that might be hitting a pulley. Although is sounds too loud to be....it also could be electrical arching.
  11. Does the noise change dependent on current draw? Lights and A/C off versus on.
  12. Even if you gained 2 mpg (which is unlikely), it would take you several years to recover the cost of the mods at today's prices. Makes no sense to me.
  13. You can get the cable off by operating the throttle by hand and lifting the cable out. Disconnect the end of the cable from the throttlebody. Twist it around once and put it back on make sure it does not untwist.
  14. Hook up your scanner and look at the throttle position when your gas pedal is depressed all the way. If it is less than 100%. remove cable connection and twist the cable 1 turn and reconnect. Do this until you have 100% at WOT. This assumes that nothing is blocking your pedal from reaching the floor.
  15. The low speed relays are located in the driver's footwell and are slots 19 and 21. Ground pin #85 and the fan should run.
  16. Not a good decision to run with an unsprung setup. Be prepared for some expensive repairs if you dive the car hard. You crank pluses are simply warning you of what is ahead. Biggest risk is at low engine speed and heavy load during engagement. Good luck.
  17. Has he run the engine without the serpentine belt on it? This will eliminate any pulley of pump noises.
  18. The new design started in April 2000 so he should have that. Per TSB 7/00 3041 Creaking Noise In Clutch Bell Housing Area "The modified release lever was installed in production on April 19, 2000 from the following transmission number: G9600 1018220." That is why I told him to replace the parts. His car was built long before the new parts came out. He states his car is a 99.

I would have already written the EPA as well as Porsche. I would have requested a letter from Porsche stating that it is ok for my car to burn 1 quart of oil every 600 miles. If you set your mind to it, you can make a company become quite eager to find a way to make you go away. It is both entertaining for you as well as satisfying. You don't need a lawyer to get satisfaction, just your imagination. As I stated earlier, if you to not want a battle with Porsche, get rid of the Mobil 0W40 in your engine and you will find that your oil consumptions drops substantially. So what oil do you recommend! At bare minimum, 5W50, but anything other than Mobil 0W40 will reduce consumption. Personal preference is 15W50 high mileage as it still contains the better cleaning agents.

  22. If my car burned even a quart every 10,000 miles, I would make sure Porsche fixed the problem. I would make sure that their oil consumption test resulted in whatever consumption rate they needed to take action. There is no excuse for any engine to go through anywhere near the amount of oil Porsche says is normal. Rather than make a better engine, Porsche prefers to lower their standards and most people simply accept it.
