  1. Still need more info. Stripped the threads or the drive head of the screw? Is your torx screw tool in the head of the screw and the screw rotates when you turn the tool? Is the air bag off?
  2. If it is the connector in the picture then the part number should be 999 650 150 40, same number for left and right. Double check with your parts department. Jeff
  3. I spoke to Peter today and I misunderstood what he said to do. You hook up a 100 ohm resistor to bridge pins 7 and 8. On Loren's diagram for the passenger side follow wires 1 and 2 down to pins 7 and 8. On the drivers side follow wires 2 and 3 down to pins 7 and 8. Jeff
  4. Are you putting a new cluster in, for some reason? Do not have to disconnect the battery to swap the cluster. In fact you can just hook up any old style cluster to your 1999. If you hooked up a replacement cluster that has zero miles then it will still be zero miles in your car and work just fine. PST2 is not needed to 'turn on' a cluster. The mileage is stored in the instrument cluster. PST2 is needed, like Loren said, to enter your VIN and the actual mileage and transfer over the info to the new cluster. There is no Porsche or DMV approval needed. I do not think PCNA would know about a cluster replacement unless it was done under warranty or there is a record of non-warranty work at your dealer. Jeff
  5. You remove the top relay and break off or bend pin 18, which defeats the speed signal. If you want to defeat the need to pull up the brake you solder a ground wire to pin 15. A neat thing that has just come out in Germany is SmartTop and it has good reviews on the German and UK Boxster boards. This is a modified top relay. It does the same thing as the TechArt relay and TouchTop, but it is one part. Simply exchange the oem relay with the SmartTop relay. They only have a modified relay for MY00 and newer, but say they are working on My97-99. Jeff Pic from Jason of oem relay with ground wire.
  6. The plug from the non-smoker fits my 'smoker' socket. Jeff Trim removal on a 2003 Boxster. Jeff
  7. There have been problems with the LCD displays on the old style cluster. I bought a 'new' 996 cluster for my Boxster on ebay and as you can see from the picture it was used with 990 miles and had a defective middle LCD display in that some of the segments would not light up. I have removed and replaced clusters w/o disconnecting the battery with no problems. Does the cluster otherwise work? Are the 3 connectors properly seated and locked? Do you see the light show when you turn on the key and do the gauges work? Sure, you could have purschase a defective cluster, I did, but it does seem strange all 3 displays do not work. Have you checked the bulbs for the LCD display. There is a bulb behind each display, the one in the tan holder as you can see in the second picture. If a bulb is bad you cannot see the display. But this would mean that that you have 3 bad bulbs? Check it out and report back. Jeff
  8. According to my 2002 price list the full list price of the sensor for a C2 is $231.55 and for a C4 it is $171.20. Guess I will not be buying parts for your local dealer. This is the fuel filter for future reference. A pain to get to if the car is not on a lift but it can be done if you are thin. Jeff
  9. Small world. My German client Hans Hoermann owned 45% of Raytek, based in Santa Cruz. He sold the company last year to Fluke, a subsidiary of Danaher. When I need parts from Germany he sends them to me But the PST2 is made by Bosch with Porsche software. There is a look alike Bosch KTS computer but it does not work on our cars. Do not know of any place outside of Porsche to buy a PST2, but if you find one let us know. Jeff
  10. It goes over the existing plastic pedal and is held in place with screws. Jeff
  11. Can't help as I have not yet seen the new sport exhaust and I have not seen a Porsche TSB on it. A few years ago there was a Boxster guy with a sport exhaust who wired in a switch. He did not use a dash switch, but had a radio shack switch located near the rear storage box above the engine. He had a site but I cannot find it. I stay away from electrical stuff, but I think a switch wired into the relay might be what you want. The new 996 sport exhaust uses a switch. I wonder if you can use the switch kit from a 996 on the old Boxster sport exhaust? Maybe Gert knows as he sells the kit. Jeff
  12. Do not know anything about a GT3 but that looks like the sensors on the suspension for the headlights on a Boxster and 996. Should also be another one on the left rear. 601 is the code for litronics. This is it on the left front on a 2003 Boxster with litronics. You can see the mini-drop link that runs from the suspension to the sensor in the middle of the picture. Jeff
  13. My friend Chris who was the shop foreman at my local dealer bought the one sold by Baum Tools for a palm pilot. I figured it must be good since he paid for it out of his pocket and had access to the dealership's PST2. He let me borrow it and even I could figure out how to use it. Jeff
  14. Porsche does not publish wheel weights. Some time ago Al Hoover came up with a list of weights for 6 different types of wheels, but turbo and GT2 were not listed. Jeff
  15. I talked to the shop foreman Peter Smith at my local dealer in San Jose to see what the policy was or did they screw up by not charging me for the latest fix. Peter said they do it for free even if the car is out of warranty. He does not know if this should be the same policy at all dealerships. He suggested you call PCNA directly. There is no way my local dealer ate the cost of the fix - I'm sure they billed PCNA. Jeff
  16. A Boxster oil pressure sender unit only has one terminal and one wire since we do not have a gauge, just an on or off idiot light in the cluster. A 996 sender has 2 wires, one for the same idiot light, plus a wire for the gauge. Replace the Boxster sender with a 996 sender. Hook up our existing wire to the 996 sender for the idiot light, then run an new wire from the sender to the gauge. The sender is on the passenger side cam cover and it would not be hard to run a wire under the carpet or under the center console to the dash area. If you did not want you run the second wire then just hook up our single wire the the 996 sender terminal for the gauge side of the sender. Then remove the other end of the wire from the back of the instrument cluster that goes to the idiot light and hook it up to the gauge. The idiot light will no longer work but you don't need it since you have a gauge. Then buy any electrical gauge you like that reads 0-5 bars. Jeff
  17. Talk to Joe Silva at Custom Alignment in Mountain View. He takes care of the 'problems' from a local Porsche dealer, and put on a tech session each year for us Porsche owners. Jeff http://www.customalignment.com/
  18. The torx screw goes into a rubber well nut and the rubber is supposed to be tight enough in it's hole so it will not spin, but they do spin when they get old and if the screw has been tightened too much. I you look at your amp or cd changer the bolts that hold them in place also go into rubber well nuts and we have the same problem with them. To keep it from spinning while you are trying to remove the screw press hard with you fingers on the plastic cover right next to the washer under the screw head. That should keep the well nut from spinning. When I put those torx screws back I just snug them up - do not even try to tighten them. Jeff
  19. Once you have the entire instrument cluster pod out of the car then remove the 2 screws that hold the cluster to the the pod. Then remove the screws that hold the 'hood' to the plastic surround. There are 10 of them on a Boxster. This is another Boxster picture so your 996 will look a bit different. Jeff
  20. 996 cluster for 1998-2001 has bulbs. LEDs are use in the turbo cluster and in the 2001 up Boxster. You can tint the lighting bulbs any color you like. Jeff
  21. There are 3 switches but this noise will not be related. No way to figure out the cause of a noise over the internet. Have someone work the top switch while you watch what is going on. Check to see that every fitting is tight. Lubricate everything that moves, rotates, or slides. Make sure that every ball joint is tight and all clips are in place. I agree with Mark when you said your top is not true and you changed the length of the push rod by turning the red plastic joint - but one turn is not much. This would mean the top transmissions are out of sync if everything else was in good condition. The length of the push rod can be adjusted with the bolt that holds the 2 pieces together. Look and make sure the bolt is tight. If all else fails send us a plane ticket and we will fix it for you.
  22. I called the parts dept and 996 106 147 07 is the latest and greatest plastic tank, replacing the one that ends in 06. Full list is $283 - must be made of special and expensive plastic.
