How many miles could i drive with MAS unplugged?

Recommended Posts

Reason im asking this question is cause the mechanic that replaced my MAS months ago is replacing it again but for free. He wants me to drop off the sensor and wait till the end o the day for the new one to arrive. Anyone know how many miles i could drive with the MAS unplugged?

BTW the boxster is my only car and i dont wanna miss work cause the car is sitting at the shop waiting for a new MAS to be delivered the same day.

It should be, I already drove the car once in the past with it disconnected to diagnose an issue with the MAS, I was given that advice awhile back on the forum, so i already know the car will run better with it unpluged if the MAS is faulty. My question is, How long could i drive it like that. I plan on unpluging it and removing it and plugging the mounting hole until i get the New MAS the next day.

I drove my car for about a week with the MAF disconnected while a replacement was shipped. It was summer so it was quite warm. Other than the glowing check engine light I didn't notice any difference. I'm pretty sure I would not have passed emissions, but it did not effect driveability at all.

Hi have had mine disconnected for 2 days and done about 20kms, as its obviously shot the car goes like a rocket, it doesnt want to run well first strat of the day but runs fine by the end of the driveway.

What it does now is, rev freely without hestitation, changes geras (tiptronic) when you hold the accelerator against the floor, the cruise control stops cutting out.

I too was wondering if leaving it disconnected (as opposed to removed) would be an isue, as runs well I can only speculate that its OK, as I assume all that would happen is that the enine would run to lean or rich as I assume the MAF has influnece over mixture and I suppose timing.

Leaving it out would bypass the air filter which is potentially dangerous sucking in foreign objects.

I'm only a bush mechanic (meaning a DIYer) so treat the above with caution, maybe an expert can comment.

MY issue is that I need to order from the USA as its under half price so I will probably reconnect to play safe

With the MAF disconnected the system goes into its limited operation strategy - a sort of approximate setting, it is approximate because it wont have air temperature or flow being measured and if presented for a MOT then it would fail on emmisions.

However because you intend to remove the MAF you will need to blank the hole where it comes out or you will take air in unfiltered, once blanked however you can drive all day - there will be a slight hit on performance but nothing to cause worry

I see, By no means would i bypass the airfilter, I removed the sensor today and cleaned the area around the gapping hole and tapped it up so its got a air tight temporary seal. Its running quite well without LOL i guess my mas was really wakky
