Engine stumbles while refueling

About 10-15 seconds after I start refueling, my 01S engine stumbles. It lasts a few seconds and then catches without stalling. Any ideas?

The fuel system had an EVAP closed loop recovery system that uses engine vacuum to operate. By not shutting off the engine, you are creating a vacuum leak, causing the problem. Shut the damned thing off when you refuel............

Where I live they won't let you pump fuel unless your engine is shut off.

I prefer to think of it as the "F1" method. But seriously, I've been doing that since I started driving and will continue, except for the Boxster. Thx...

You'll get a check engine light due to a EVAP code sooner or later.

I refuel while my cars are running, no worries about theft where I live.

I will not do that with the boxster though, too finicky of a vacuum system.

Refueling while the engine is still runnimg is bad JuJu.

In a Boxster it can also lead to avoidable expenses.

Very, very remove possibility of explosion from gas fumes and high emissions.

From page 172 in MY03 Boxster Owner's Manual:

Refuelling

1. Important: Stop the engine and switch off the ignition.

Later on the same page:

Check engine warning light

If the warning light in the instrument panel comes on and remains on while driving, it suggests:

- an improperly fastened gas cap or

- refuelling with engine running.

Besides eliminating yet another reason for the CEL to illuminate, refuelling with the engine turned off probably complies with the enviornmental laws of many countries, states or municipalities in which Porsche does business. And, as mentioned above, there is always the safety - not to mention liability - consideration when handling volitile gasoline.

Well, in some states it is illegal to leave the car running for saftey reasons...............and it will cause a CEL in many newer cars as well.....

30 years ago, as a teenager, I worked at a gas station in CT. The rule then and now was cars had to be turned off during refueling. This one old guy in a Pontiac would come in on occasion and when you finished pumping his gas (filler behind the license plate), he would restart the car. It never failed, that beast of a car would backfire. It would get your attention, particularlly at night. So here's all these just-dispensed fuel vapors, hanging out by the rear of the car, when this things blats out a tongue of flame. So I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Now static charges around the pump, that scares me.
