I was thinking of replacing my canister oil filter with a billet spin-on oil filter adapter. I would think this would be beneficial because I can use a K&N Gold oil filter. Any comments would be appreciated.

tfisher:

This approach is recommended by Charles Navarro and Jake Raby. They sell such an adapter. IIRC, using a Mobil 1 or a K&N filter is an improvement over the stock oil filter according to their recommendation.

Regards, Maurice.

What's the difference between the canister and billet spin-on type? Can/should this be done for a 997 M96 3.8 as well?

Aside from being easier to remove and install, it gives you a wider choice of brands of filter, and the Mobil 1 and K & N filters (IIRC) are claimed to be much better at filtration and circulation.

I believe there is also a provision for an external oil tank to be connected to the filter adapter, but I'll have to do a little more reading.

It can be done for any M96 engine. Read the rationale on the LN Engineering and Flat6Innovations website to see what you think.

Regards, Maurice.

Found LN's spin-on filter adapter here: http://www.lnengineering.com/store/catalog...tool-p-103.html. There's also a much better photo of it in Jim Pasha's December 08 Excellence article (thanks Maurice!) I'll likely order one before my next (and more frequent) oil change in 6 months or so. Has anyone here installed one?

I looked at the spin-on adapter and the oil filters. But the spin-on oil filters looked a lot smaller than the OEM ones. I always thought oil filter size was important. Does anyone know how the stock vs. LN-engineered oil filter options compare in terms of filter area?

The install is very easy. I believe there is a video of it being done on You Tube. Maybe search Raby? The video has a couple of tips that are very useful during the install.

The install video is on the LNEngineering site - it includes more than enough detail for the average DIY'er.

It's on their site, http://www.lnengineering.com/spinonfilteradapter.html, but Mr. Navarro said it's probably better to view it on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv8BTItCrF0. It looks so easy, even all-thumbs-me could install it.

I thought about adding a spin on filter, but I decided for the amount of driving I do, since this is a summer car, and I will only do 1 oil change a year before it goes into storage, It wasn't worth it to me. The only benefit of putting for me to put on a spin on filter is to add a filtermag on it. On my SUV, I use a filtermag on my oil filter.

The adapter comes with install tool.

Charles Navarro verified for me yesterday that the new filter does not extend down closer to road than stock.

As far as the actual filter goes this is from the LN site:

"The K&N Gold oil filter use resin impregnated cellulose filter media. This allows for higher flow rates while providing outstanding filtration. High filter flow rates are important in racing vehicles where heavier grade oil is used and the oil is pumped much faster than in a standard vehicle. When the engine is circulating oil at high GPM rates, the high-flow oil filter helps reduce the loss of pressure through the filtering process. This is the best filter, no questions asked. Manufactured by Champion just like the Mobil 1 braned [sic] oil filter. The only difference is the 1" nut on the bottom of the K&N filter."
