Boxter 986 shift knob

Hi,I'm newbie in forum - my name is Giannis - and first I want to say a big "Hello" to all of you :cheers:

I'm Greek and I leave in Athens - Greece , I have a 986 boxter 2001, 2.7L manual transmission and I would like to ask you if you know the way to take off the shift knob because I want to change the old leather.

Welcome!!

Depending on the knob it should just pull off. You will have to give it some force. Thera are some knobs that are held to the shift lever by a screw. Pull the leather boot away from the center console and see if you can see a screw. If so loosen it and the knob will come right off. If no screw that give it a really good PULL and it should come off.

I take a look under the leather and there is no screw.I pull the knob , not really hard , because i afraid to damage it, so i'll try once more harder.

For those press fit knobs that absolutely will not pull off. I tried it all on 2001 s 6 speed to no avail. I had to find another way to get it off. Since I had a new one, I could afford to trash the old one. I removed the plaque on top(popped it off). I then took a box cutter and cut the leather boot cover at backside until it came off. Then took a box cutter and sliced from top to bottom on rear side the shifter until it peeled off. Cuts easy. Very quick.

By far, the easiest way to remove a Boxster shift knob is to put the top down, and stand in the car straddling the console, pull up stoutly on the knob. Just be careful of your balance, some people end up lying on the rear boot at the end of this process......... :eek:

I took a pair of vice grips and locked it on the shaft about 1 inch below the base of the knob, then with laid a small screwdriver handle (about diameter of a AA battery) across the top of the vice grips about an inch away from the shaft. Using a large open end wrench that fits around the shifter shaft, I slid the wrench over the shaft between the screw driver handle and the knob and used the screw driver handle as the fulcrum and just squeezed the vice grips and open end wrench, knob popped off with minimal effort.
