2011 Cayenne - ball carrier and ball for pre-installed trailer hitch

I bought my 2011 Cayenne S Tiptronic with the trailer hitch pre-installed.

What else do I need so that I can tow a trailer?

In these forums I found a suggestion to stay with the Porsche hardware because after-market hitches cannot take full advantage of the towing capacity of this vehicle.

Contacted the parts department at my dealer and was told there is no Porsche part for this.

Further, that I could get the wiring connector from the Audi dealer, and the trailer people would set me up with the right ball carrier and ball for my trailer.

Something does not sound right - I asked the wrong question or received an incorrect answer.

I do not have a trailer and the idea was to have a set-up just in case a need came up, including helping somebody who might be stuck somewhere.

Suggestions? Thanks!

If you indeed do have the trailer hitch installed then look to the left of the receiver for the electrical connection. If it's there, then you need only to purchase a standard receiver with whatever sized ball you need a 4 or 7 pin trailer harness plug depending on what's required for your trailer. They are VW part number.

Thanks. After posting my question, I got under the car and could now see a black rectangular plate fastened with four screws to the right of the hitch (looking up from below, facing the rear of the car).

The plug from the trailer wiring probably goes into whatever is beneath that plate.

Since it is a factory install, I am guessing the programming is already done.

The black plate is a weather proof connector to protect the plug until you install the adaptor needed for your trailer. The rule of thumb is a 4 pole connector for a standard trailer and the 7 pole for a trailer requiring brakes. The module should be coded from factory but sometimes they needed to updated to function correctly.

Thanks again. The part numbers I got are:

ZVW808007 @ $74

HOP47355 @ $25

The second one is likely a Hopkins part, not sure about the first.

Another question:

Is the brake controller part of the factory installation?

If one were to attach a trailer that requires/has brakes, with the appropriate seven-pin connector, is everything good to go?

The early Cayennes where pre-wired for the brake command wiring from the brake pedal area to the trailer module but I'm not sure if this the case on the newer models.

Prodigy Brake Controller by Tekonsha comes highly recommended and they now have a wireless option but I don't know the details.

Thanks. I stopped by the dealership and confirmed that the pre-wiring for the brake controller still comes with the trailer option in the configuration of a car order.

The dealership does not do the the installation of the brake controller.

They sent me off to a trailer place.

It turned out that the trailer place would not touch any Porsche because of issues of updating the system.

They use a basic Draw-Tite controller.

All this raises a basic question - what is the point of a brake controller?

If one were towing just occasionally and over short distances, is the brake controller necessary?

I have had very good luck with the Tekonsha wired-type set up and tow a 6500 pound trailer every other weekend over mountain passes, through bad weather and fairly aggressive terrain. Brake controller and the activated trailer brakes distribute braking effort which results in greater stability and from a financial impact perspective, the reduction in replacement of the fairly expensive brake system components on the Cayenne itself are of substantial benefit.

All - I posted a similar question in the Cayenne Gen 1 forum, but wanted to post it here too in case someone may have an idea or two to help.

I have a 2013 Cayenne diesel with factory installed tow package. I added the 7-way plug and Prodigy P3 controller w/ harness. When I connect the brake controller and test it (internal Prodigy tests), I see a 14v+ for the power, but I see 0 volts for brakes and lights. I did not have a trailer hooked up at the time of the tests, so perhaps that is the problem. Or is there something else I need to do? For example, even though it is a factory install of the tow package, is there still a step the dealer needs to do to activate the Porsche electrical trailer controller system?

Thanks for any thoughts.

      Hello Everyone,
      I currently own a 2010 Porsche Cayenne Base model that has no trailer hitch and I was wondering is the Hitch for the 2007-2010 Audi Q7 or VW Touareg interchangeable with the Cayenne's? Its hard to find a used OEM Cayenne Hitch but I can find plenty of VW and Audi ones and at a better price. Any input would help. Thanks in advance.

      So I have a 2011 Cayenne S.  I took it on a road trip in July and did over 6000kms pulling my 19ft travel trailer.  No issues pulling it at all, quite the opposite.  The pig performed like a champ!  Now I'm home and commuting back and forth to work and I start hearing a sporadic whining noise.  Sounds like gear/tranny/transfer case noise.  it comes and goes.  there is no grinding sounds or anything like that just a whining.  I'm wondering if she burned through some fluid during her hauling roadtrip?  Would low fluid levels cause whining?

      Hey folks,  I just bought a 2011 Cayenne S to replace my 2006.  Wow what a difference!  Anyways, the TPMS has 2 dead sensors.  What replacements works?  I can't seem to get a straight answer... looking for cost effective option.  What have you actually bought and used that actually works?  Model names, numbers etc... are appreciated

      I just finished installing a Prodigy Brake Controller today on a 2008 Cayenne. I found a couple of write ups that were helpful but not completely clear.
      First off if you have a Trailing Hitch installed on your Cayenne you also have a factory trailer wiring harness for a 7 pin connector. By the hitch, there is a blank plastic piece that needs to be removed and replaced with a 7 pin connector. You can get this connector from your Porsche Parts department, Part PNA-955-118-93,it was $30 CND so it will be like $2 in the US.

      Now if you don't want a brake controller just buy a 7pin to 4 pin converter and you are done. Running lights, Brake Lights and Turn signals will all be working.
      If you do want the brake controller, you need to build a harness. There is a pretty good write up from Tekonsha on how to make the harness for reference. http://www.macscheck...scheCayenne.pdf However what they do not mention is the newer Cayenne's do not have brake switch with a red/black wire, it has been moved into the engine bay. So you will have to make use of the brake signal in the factory 4 pin connector. Which in the end is just as simple, so lets start.
      Likely 10" of wire.
      A bunch of squeeze on connectors if you can't soldier like me.
      A 20A 12V micro breaker
      A 20A/30A 12 4-5 pin relay, from an auto parts store (this will be labelled with pins 85,86,87,87a(not used) and 30.)
      The VW connector, 1J0972782 and 2 VW connector wires 000979228
      I believe all of these parts was about $70 with the connector wires being the most expensive.
      The objective is to take the 4 pin factory connection under the dash and prep it for the Prodigy controller. For the most part this is direct connection.
      1. Take the VW wires 000979228 and cut them in half so you end up with 4 wires with a connector on each end.
      2. Insert all 4 of the wires into the VW connector 1J0972782. On the connector there are numbers 1 to 4.
      3. Start with connector wire 1 which is the vehicle ground. You need to end up with two grounds, one for the prodigy harness (white) and one for the relay pin 85. To achieve the two wires, I used a marrette, twist the connector wire 1, the prodigy harness white, and 5 inches of other wire into one Marrette. Connect the new wire you added to pin 85 on the relay.
      4. Take connector wire 2 which is the vehicle 12V, run it to the 20A 12V micro breaker, off the other side of the micro breaker use another Marette and bring in the 12V out of the micro breaker, the black wire from the Prodigy harness and 5 inches of other wire. Run the 5 inches of other wire to pin 30 on the relay.
      5a. Take connector wire 3 which is the vehicle brake signal. Run is wire directly to pin 86 on the relay. What you are doing is converting the brake signal to a constant 12v signal that the Prodigy will understand.
      5b. To finish up this, connect the red wire from the Prodigy harness to pin 87 on the relay.
      6. Take connector wire 4 which is the vehicle output to the trailer electric brakes. Connect wire 4 directly with the blue wire on the Prodigy harness.
      You should end up with something that looks like this.

      A few shots of the parts:

      The Prodigy connector

      The final CTT harness for any model year as far as I can tell.

      So all you do is plug the harness in and connect the other end to the Prodigy. These pictures are were taken from some other peoples posts. Remove the lower plastic cover above the brake and gas pedal. One torx screw.

      Look straight up on the left hand side and find the factory 4 pin trailer connector. It is inside a little grey cover exactly as shown below.

      Plug the harness into the factory plug and test. Use a few zip ties to hold everything in place.
      Test your harness without the Prodigy hooked up, you should have 12v between white and black on the harness. When you apply the brake you should have 12v between the while and red.
      If everything checks out, put the plastic cover back on and mount your controller. The final test before hooking it up, is checking that pin 1 to 2 on the rear 7 pin connector gives you a voltage output when applying the brakes.
      I hope that helps someone doing this simple install, the dealer quoted me $600 plus parts to do the same job, so I am happy with the result of doing it myself.
