Durametric Porsche Code 493 - PSM Fault Combination Sensor Question...

Hi everyone,.  Finally got my Durametrics cable today and it is great!  I reset the service reminder (100 bucks at local dealer/stealer) and pulled the PSM fault code I get occasionally.  Was wondering if anyone can help shed some light on it.  It is code 493 "Combination Sensor Faulty" pic below.  I did a search and only thing I can find is an article that said it was behind the gear shift and communicates with the PSM.  Just was wondering if just simply buying a new "combination sensor" and replacing it will fix the problem or is there other things I should be aware of maybe?  Also after a bit of researching I'm wondering if this code is referring to the "steering angle sensor"?  Not sure since I can't find anything on code 493, tried checking the DIY tools link but didn't see it there either.


Also just curious since I'm new to Durametrics even though my PSM fault light is currently off I was able to pull that code, so am I right to assume the code is "stored" like with an OBDII code even though it is not a current fault or can the fault be current but not showing a light on the dash?  I'm assuming it can be b/c I "cleared" it to see what would happen but it immediately came back in Durametrics even though the light was off on the dash indicating there was no issue.  My PSM light comes on with the fault once in a while, usually on the first start up of day then I never see it again, so any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Fault code 0493 

Combination sensor


Possible cause of fault:
Actual value of functions integrated in the combination sensor:
• Rate-of-turn sensor
• Axial acceleration sensor
• Transverse acceleration sensor is evaluated and displays an implausible value (implausible signal).
• Internal CAN: Wire faulty (no signal/communication)
• Short circuit to B+ (electrical fault in electric circuit)
• Short circuit to ground (electrical fault in electric circuit)
• Open circuit in circuit to control module (electrical fault in electric circuit)
• Combination sensor faulty

Thanks guys, and Loren rep for the detailed answer!!!!  Any idea where to start on solving it?  Also is there a code list that I can search to find codes in the future?  The DIY link on the codes doesn't seem to correspond to the one you posted above or am I missing something?  Thanks again!!!  Oh, and I called Porsche and asked about getting a new combination sensor and they have no idea what I'm talking about  :huh: ?

The DIY link for codes is for P-codes - those are engine emissions codes only.

Other codes for different control modules are in the Porsche Service Manuals.


Start by checking the power and ground as well as the connections.


Has the car had any steering or suspension work lately? If so, then these sensors need to be re-calibrated with a Porsche PIWIS tester.

Welcome. Which codes do you speak off Ely? 


The combination sensor is a lateral and axial acceleration sensor mounted under the centre console cup holders I think. 

Shift problems at lower temps sounds more like a temp sensor or valve body issue maybe the old oil is too viscous at that low temp to flow and function the gear shifts properly automatically?

Couple of obvious things is your battery in good condition (colder weather will reduce electron flow) and is the transmission serviced well, fluid and filter changed recently?
