Howling Noise at 2800 RPM in 5th & 6th Gear

Recommended Posts

Experiencing a howling noise around 2800 RPM in 5th and 6th gears. I can't tell if its coming from engine, transmission or rear-end? Does this problem sound familar to anyone?

Funny, I hear something just like this around the same engine speed in my '03 986 S. Sounds like it's coming from the passenger air intake. It only happens when I have the throttle in a very specific position, so I assume it's just vacuum and nothing to worry about. It also only seems to happen at higher altitudes.

I have a low moaning resonance. Don't know if you are refering to the same thing, but it's about the right RPM and gear. It can get quite annoying and tiresome on long highway drives.

I think it's engine/drivetrain resonance. All the 987's I've test driven have it, and my car has it. It's part of the car's character. Annoying, but the only thing anyone can do about is drive slower/faster or have the top down.

I have a '99 986 with 83K miles. Just started hearing that same noise about 2-3 weeks ago. Quiet until I hit 5th gear, and then at most speeds but particularly over 25, getting ? louder as speed increases. High whine when I'm on the gas, stops when I'm off the gas. Disturbing because it just started happening. Did you guys ever find out what it was?

Thanks in advance!

I believe that you may be describing the "Coke bottle" howl associated with a faulty valve in the charcoal canister. It is a known problem with the 986s, and does not seem to be related to age, as I had it on my 2000 S from about 5,000 miles on. Not sure if there was a TSB for this.

Thanks, I'll check it out!

I was also wondering what this howling noise is.

Hear it at cruising with gas, immediately stops when pedal's released.

It doesn't seem to vary in loudness though, pretty consistent in the tone.

I was afraid it could be transmission related...hope it's not.

Anyone found out what the real cause is?

I just started hearing this same sound you guys are all describing. My thoughts are similar to Masterbm...its a disturbing sound since it just started after I crossed the 6000 mile mark on my '06 987. Also recently noticed that after I drive the car for a while and go on idle, there is a crackling sound, kind of like leaving a coin in a dryer. I guess its time to see Mr. Service.

Jimher, also have them check for TSB# 1726- for control piston in oil pump.
