Water leak in driver door

Recommended Posts

Well noticed it before after washing the car real good and figured that I must of some how gotten water on the door panel. Well after driving in a nice rain it is confirmed somehow water is getting inside the car door and saturating the lower door carpet? I had the door panel off and checked for water in the door cavity. There was no sign of water. The only proof of it is that the bottom 1" of the carpeting is completely saturated? TIA

When my car was new (to me), I thought the dealer had left the window cracked when doing the pre-delivery wash. Carpet was saturated in right rear.

Turned out to be stopped up water drainage lines.

You can search here for that thread. Not technically difficult, but a good deal of labor involved.

Hi thanks for the thought but this does not affect and of the cabin carpet just the little strip on the bottom of the door around the speaker. I'm gonna do some more inspecting but I am really at a loss with this. I do know that there was a little water on the speaker housing in the door when I removed the panel so I am going to go through the side view mirror mount. I'll post what I find incase someone else should run into this.

Mine has the same problem, I understand it is quite a common issue and is caused by a failure of the waterproof membrane in the door.

Mine's booked in for a new membrane in a couple of weeks.

Hi, Well I'm just not sure if it could be the outer trim that goes along the window bottom or if it is the side view mirror base that is allowing it to happen. I noticed that there is a 3/16th gap between the glass and the rubber seal aroung the mirror base. I just dont know maybe I can adjust the mirror base as the window was about 1/4in too far forward. I have adjusted the window to the correct position, the part that gets me about that though is that I know it had this problem before I adjusted the window. We'll see.

I would start here (see pic)

post-2-1137683656_thumb.jpg post-2-1137683926_thumb.jpg

Then I would check the door edge seal, then - that the window is sealing at the top.

O.K. I give has anyone done this themselves? I have the seats out putting in my sub system and wel I found that the botom of the carpet foan is moist. so if I am going to have the car this far aprt I want to go ahead and do the water lines. So please any pointers would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I've got this problem on my 996 and a friends 996 is the same.

If you just have a wet doorliner (especially the fabric part around the speaker at the front of the door) then forget drain lines, they have nothing to do with it. Some suggest it's the membrane on the inside of the door (basically just plastic glued to the inside of the door). Problem is that water will still enter the car through the holes where the plastic pins that hold the door liner are popped on as the penetrate the membrane. I haven't done the process on my car yet, but the outer door seal is probably the way to go. It's the rubber part that sits between the door and the glass on the outside of the car. See item 4:

Thanks for the information, I will be looking at this issue in the next couple of weeks. I will keep you informed of what I find.
