  1. The security code stored in the CDR23 is matched with a code programmed in the DME. If the two codes match, the radio comes on. The codes are not transmitted by the MOST bus. They are transmitted by the diagnosis line. This is a white/red wire connected to the green plug on the CDR. Edit: There are companies who can remove the security codes, so that it can be used in any car. I know of 2 or 3 in the UK, but none in the US, I'm afraid.
  2. I'm afraid that isn't correct. The immobiliser inhibits the starter, fuel pump, and ignition: I'm not saying that it is the problem - only that it could be. You will find the starter relay on the panel under the carpet behind the back seats. The starter is triggered by the DME, but it could still be the ignition switch causing the problem. A little unlikely, perhaps, as the switch contacts handle very little current. They do break up mechanically inside the switch though. The first sign of failure is usually when you have trouble removing the key, or when it doesn't spring back.
  3. Check the DME fuse (engine electronics). C1 iirc. Do US cars have a clutch interlock switch? If so, that might be worth checking. Can you hear the fuel pump running for just a couple of seconds when you switch on the ignition? If not, it might be the immobiliser has cut it. The immobiliser inhibits the fuel pump, ignition, and the starter.
  4. What was the number of the update disk? As I said, I don't think it was necessary. It is only required for MY2005 and 2006 cars. As it reads SW 4.0, I doubt if the update disk has done anything. The 2006 DVD should still work in your system. The firmware would not need backdating. When you insert a map disk it asks you to confirm an update, but this only updates the POIs in the head unit. The incompatibility you refer to is the original 2004 disk, which cannot be used after the firmware update required for the 2005/6 maps. If you have tried a 1-4-8 reset, I think it might be a hardware issue too. You are welcome to come down for a diagnostic test, but I'm sure there would be a local independent specialist who could do it for the cost of the fuel to get here and back. I'll email you my details anyway.
  5. I don't think you really needed to update the firmware in order to run the latest maps. My Cayman is MY 2007, and the software version is 4.0. (Press MAIN and TRIP to check). The 2012 map ran on mine without updating the system at all. I also use a copy DVD in the drive, and keep the original safe at home, so if it is a good copy it should be OK. I would get a diagnostic check done on the PCM with a PIWIS tester. If you are anywhere near me, drop me a PM, as I would be happy to do it for you.
  6. 3.6 1999? I can't quite make out the wire colours. Could you post them and confirm the model year, which would give us something to go on.
  7. Feed for the radio is Porsche Terminal 86s, which is ignition switched. It might be worth checking a Terminal 15 supply, which is also ignition switched. I have no idea if it will go off when cranking, but it is worth a try. You don't say model or year of your car, but this is from the 2002 wiring diagrams which shows Bridge Plug 16/1 on the relay board, which is a Terminal 15 supply. Wire colour is Black/Brown.
  8. A PDF for all model years is available here: http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutorials/article/62-fuse-assignments/
  9. The latest disk for Europe is 08.2012. The software version on your 2007 car should not need updating to run the new disk. It was plug & play in mine..
  10. It does sound like the immobiliser. I would start by checking the fuse for the alarm module, and the fuse for the engine electronics.
  11. As Karl says, just get a p&g SIM, and leave it in the full size card. O2 and Vodafone work, as they still operate the old 900Mhz GSM network. Other suppliers like Tesco, Asda, and BT Mobile also work, as they use the O2 and Voda networks. Later PCM uses both 900 and 1800MHz networks, which is why there is a lot more choice of SIMs..
  12. It might also be the inner or outer track rod ends are worn, and there is some play in one or more. This seems to be getting increasingly common, and does give a tramlining effect.
  13. You cannot update a PIWIS clone beyond version 31. Version 32 contaned a BIOS update which can only be applied to a KTS650 or genuine PIWIS1. It may work with a VMWare V34, but I haven't tried it.
  14. I think RFM is correct, and the alarm module has slipped into transit (energy saving) mode. I've seen this on a few occasions, and the symptoms are as you describe. You need to get it plugged in to a PST2 or PIWIS tester, and perform the "Sports Car Handover" routine in the Special Functions menu.
  15. I sometimes got this on my 996T if I moved the lever slowly between P and R. It never did it if I made a positive movement between the two. I put it down to a lazy multifunction switch (on the bottom of the lever) but I can't say if it was that for certain.
  16. I have the ViseeO bluetooth phone module and it is excellent. I have the MFSW and it works perfectly. Other options are the NAV-TV Tooki, Mobridge, and Dension. In case you don't know, Porsche have just released a map update for PCM2.1 for Europe, dated 08.2012. I have just bought it, and it doesn't need any further software updates, other than the ones you have listed.
  17. I added a key to my nephew's '05 997C2S. It was a while ago, so I don't recall the detail, but it took two or three attempts. First, you do it with the ignition off, but with the hazard warning lights flashing, which activates the CAN bus. I think the thing you have to get right is pressing the remote button at the right time - ie quickly after getting the instruction.
  18. Dare I say a loose spark plug? Quite a common occurrence, and most people describe the noise as a chirp.
  19. Did you initialise the sensor when you fitted it? I don't know if it will help your problem, but it is so easy to do that it is worth a try: 1. Turn wheels to straight-ahead position. 2. Start engine. 3. From the straight-ahead position, turn steering wheel approx. 20° to the left and 20° to the right (past straight-ahead position). 4. Drive the vehicle straight ahead for at least one second at a speed of over 4 km/h (2.5 mph). Following successful initialisation, the stored fault code is set to "Not present". The PSM indicator light in the instrument cluster goes out.
  20. Why not get a new bearing fitted? Have a word with Mike at Sports & Classic in Knutsford, as he does quite a lot of rebuilds on these boxes. Edit: http://www.sportsandclassic.com/index.php?page=services_gearbox_rebuilds
  21. We pay about GBP1.45 per litre over here. That works out to approximately $9.00 per US gallon.
