Gearbox Removal

Hi folks okay what started as me deciding to do my own cv boots has resulted in me doing that little oil leak and all was well until 10 mins ago i came across a Torx bit in the bell housing that i cannot find a Torx bit for , has anyone got any ideas what size and type of Torx bit this is as im stuck now , many thnx in advance folks :thankyou:

Reason you cannot find a Torx socket for it is that it is not a Torx, it is an XZN triple square (10MM if memeory is working) and why are you taking out the gearbox to do CV boots?:

I recall the same problem when I removed my gearbox. Because its a triple square you can gently use an allen bit to remove it. The catch, as I recall was that the space is too tight for the socket wrench to get into it with the socket. I simply put a combination wench around the bit and slipped it into the bolt. It easily removed the bolt.

@JFP hi mate yep i got the dreaded rear end seal gone not bad just 1 drip on the floor in a week , been like it for ages , but my expansion bottle cracked so i thought id just as well do the other bits while im down here with the plates and braces off :thumbup: so far the hardest part was the :censored: expansion bottle everything else was a breeze until this **** bolt :D

@yeeha what do you call a combination wrench buddy , as so far each bolt has been hugely tight :D i had to have a smoke and coffee in between each bolt:cheers:

This is what I used. A combination wrench with an allen socket. As I recall it was a 10mm size? The allen is the same as a tripple square but has half as many teeth so you need to be gentle with it. I think I might have even used a pipe cheater bar to get some leverage on it. (yes, I know, bad protocol, but when the transmision is hanging there, theres no time to wait 2 weeks for a special order socket.)

The Snap-On unit in my post above is a "stubby" that will fit, most Snap-On dealers carry them at about $7.50..............

Thnx guys yep i tried the allen key and it worked perfectly just waiting for my son to get home and give me a hand steadying the box as i lower it , thnx again its much appreciated :cheers:

You can get the bits at Autozone...but they're too long, so I cut the necessary one down:

I got one from NAPA. It's also too long. I cut it down with a few cutoff wheel bits on my Dremel, and then put a box end wrench on it.
