noise from engine compartment

Recommended Posts

I have a 1999 C2 with 140k miles with a recent CEL accompanied by a "whirring" noise.

Upon startup I get a whirring noise that lasts approx 1 minute before it stops.  At first I thought it was it was the engine compartment fan but after checking I that is not it.

Please chime in if you have any suggestions as to what I should check.

thanks

That is secondary air pump. It is required to meet emissions standards.

Perfectly normal sound.

Hello Loren,

Thanks for the reply.  The thing that is unusual about it is that it has never done this before.

I also get an intermittent sound from the engine compartment when I start the car.  It is a "screeching" sound that makes me think there is something slipping or rattling around.  I checked the serpentine belt and it seems fine.

It could be the bearings in your secondary air injection pump.  The SAI pump is located on the left side in your engine compartment.  Should sound like a vacuum cleaner when you cold start the car.  Besides checking the serpentine belt and pulleys, if the screeching sound occurs again, you can unplug the electrical connector to the SAI pump and see if it stops.

Hi, I used to hear the sound at start up and now I don't.

Now I have a check engine light on and it's the P1411 code.

Could this be the relay is bad or the pump itself?

I know their are lots of things that cause the code, but just trying to narrow it down.

Thanks

Andy
