  1. Possible engine from Rennlist if anyone needs a 1999 996 engine/transmission just saw this listing on the portland oregon CL for a body damaged 996 w/what i assume would be a good engine/tranny for $9000 - no affiliation: http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/3060128530.html
  2. Pull the filter element out, let it drain into a clean bucket, cut the ends off spread it out and take some pics. Look in the "clean" bucket to see what landed in the bottom. Take some pics, post the pics.
  3. Also check the rubber in your transmission mount. When they start to deteriorate they will clunk. Does it also clunk when you step on the gas, let off, and step on the gas again? check the trans mount. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Porsche/911/OES_Genuine/Motor_and_Transmission_Mount/1999/Carrera/6_Cyl_3-dot-4L/W0133-1891774.html?intcmpid=Product+Listings+Best+Seller Do you often hear a rattle/clunk when you shut the car off? Check the DMF TSB 911 (996) 8/02 1360 Dual Mass Flywheel Check procedure http://www.renntech.....-procedurepdf/ Can the dual Mass Flywheel be twisted approx. 15mm in each direction, left/right, and does it return to approximately its initial position? If so it is good. Can the DMF be twisted beyond dim stated above without a noticeable increase in the spring force? Or is it fixed (no rotation?) if so bad
  4. FGR5KQE0 Bosch with 1.4mm gap for 2002> www.RockAuto.com 6 for $43.26 + shipping
  5. Check both cooling fans. There is a low speed and high speed setting on each fan depending on water temperature and if the air conditioning is on (High speed) Did you clean the radiators like this?
  6. With DRLs maybe a relay or something is hung up. Did the dealer set the DRLs, or was it one of the "pull this relay short it with a jumper wire" DRL hacks? Due to a German requirement German cars have a "Parking Light" position that enables you to activate the left or right side parking lights. On older Porsche all you had to do was push the turn signal stalk to the desired side to have lights on that side stay on after you parked. You did not have to leave the keys in the car to have this work. Our 996s have the same feature but you have to perform some additional gymnastics, look in your manual. My point is maybe that feature has a stuck relay? Try turning your passenger side park lights on to see if both stay on or it changes sides. That may give more clues as to where to look. Turn signal switch? Ign switch? Relay?
  7. Probably bolt right in. The biggest pain will be getting the electronics to work. 2003 is 2nd year for Vario-cam plus. You will need the ECU and most likely the wiring harness also. Crate engine from porsche =~$15k with rebuildable return or You could do this: http://www.renegadehybrids.com/ After observing a high numbers of engine related failures to the later 911's, Renegade Hybrids quietly slid a 2011, 430HP V8 in the back of a 1999 911 (996) and made the installation look like it was factory-born! Imagine a new, 6.2L, all aluminum LS3 stuffed perfectly in the back of a young 996? Now that sounds pretty exciting! With more cars in the works and several kits sold, Critics, Purists and Enthusiasts agree, the Renegade Hybrids 996 V8 conversion just makes perfect sense. Let's look at the facts together: The NA flat 6 engine from the 996 and an LS series all aluminum V8 weigh almost exactly the same. The 996 produced horse power in the upper 200's, yet the LS engines typically start at 335HP and quickly go up from there for pennies more!....

  9. Whole assy has to be replaced. Two screws but they are a bear to get to. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/996-forum/642778-broke-the-oil-filler-tube-update-job-completed-9th-2.html http://www.vertexaut...96 And 997.aspx
  10. A man with one clock will always know what time it is. A man with two clocks will never be sure.
  11. pin the engine at top dead center before removing any of the tensioners. Search "IMS replacement" for information.
  12. We are getting way too anal about the oil-level/pressure. Go to the local True Value and buy some flat black Krylon. Mask off the speedometer and fuel gauge and paint over the rest of the gauges. logray you should be cannonized. :king:
  13. Don't add more oil! Dip stick is final word. Gauge is very close approximate. Let it sit overnight, on a level surface. Then check first thing in AM before you start it. It is better to run 1/2 quart low then full to the top or overfilled. Your AOS will thank you. Maybe Joe Gibbs oil sticks to internals longer?
  14. Someone over at Pelican had the same problem try this thread. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-996-997-forum/665262-cabrio-rear-roll-bar-cover-removal-need-help.html
  15. Next time have her drive it every day so the clutch doesn't stick to the PP again.
  16. Take it back to the engine installer Monday. If you make it worse, break something ... it will be yours to fix. Right now it should be covered.
  17. Have you had the spare tire out yet? Some tools are stored behind it.
  18. Are you sure about the 35 profile? Most of the 285s that I have seen are 30 profile. That's what I run on my 996. 285/30 is in my manual also. 35 was brain failure. Keep me honest Fergus :notworthy:
  19. We do not have a tiptronic in the 911. But my wife's Subaru Outback has paddle shifters!??! She uses engine braking often. Sometimes double down shifting. The ECU/TCU matches RPM/Gear so there is no lurch. I get a kick out of the fact that she does that without even thinking about it but when I downshift in the 911 she gets all "Slow Down! Slow down!" because the engine revs and the FisterD's bark a little.
  20. What are the date codes on the fronts? If they are older then ~6 years you might want fresh tires on both ends.
